- Our most important discovery is that the neurons are not dying but are instead altering how they communicate with each other. A key reason is that the nerve endings, the synapses, are not receiving enough energy, says João Duarte.
2024 year’s recipient of the Medeon award, is Joao Duarte, who the past 20 years has studied how the brain is affected by diabetes. With his team at Lunds universitet, they have closely examined changes that occur in the brains of diabetics that are experiencing memory loss or dementia. The research could make it possible to reverse dementia caused by diabetes. But it’s not just limited to diabetes, it could potentially shed new light on other neurodegenerative diseases.
