COMING UP Sunday 12/10 at 9 am - our monthly Guided primary series class. This is a chance to be reminded of the breath and movements (vinyasa) of the series following the Sanskrit count. And to enjoy the group energy as we practice in sync. You don’t have to master the full series to take part, but it’s desirable to have a regular ashtanga yoga practice (beginners are advised to have completed a foundation course before attending).
After class we gather to talk about a yoga related topic (please send your wishes for discussion topics in advance) and have “fika”. Welcome to this monthly get together at the shala (if you can’t make it to class please come to the tea&talk only)’🙏🏼

Making “Shapes within shapes” - taking different forms in urban space. In connection with World Architecture Day 2025 today on 6th October, we take the opportunity to share a creative art project that we finally could realise this past summer together with architectural photographer and yoga practitioner .
Malmö, the city where is located, is a fast growing, thriving, multicultural city. “Shapes within shapes” is a project where architecture and public art meets yoga poses, where body shapes and spaces merge.
The theme of 2025 is “Design for strength”. Yoga* practice creates strength within, giving the practitioner a strong foundation physically, mentally and emotionally. In society we need good structures for stability not only in steady infrastructure, but also within the population to create resilience and sustainability. Our health is dependent on our outer and inner environment. Shapes within shapes is an artistic illustration of this interconnection.

* Yoga is a philosophy and postures are just one aspect of the practice.

On full and new moon we take a break from teaching and practicing yoga asana. Morning Mysore class is cancelled then.
Is it important not to practice on these days? Will it be bad if you do? There’s many stories about why not to practice on full/new moon and depending on who you ask you’ll get different answers. We believe that if you have a regular 5-6 day practice it’s good to give the body some extra rest from time to time, and moon days offer a good opportunity for that. It’s also a good way to practice non-attachment to the physical aspect of yoga in case you have a tendency to get obsessive about your yoga postures and body. For the teacher(s) who are at the shala daily, it’s important to get a break too and moon days bring a nice extra chance to recover.
However, if you practice less often, or can only make it to the mat when the moon days fall, nothing’s going to happen if you decide to practice asana then. You won’t have seven years of bad luck or have a spell put on you. When you take a break is your personal choice and how often you choose to make time for practice is also up to you and what works best in your life.
Please remember though that yoga practice is not only about asana, the physical postures. Yoga involves how we behave and think, and you can still practice yama and niyama the time that you are not doing shapes on the yoga mat. So on moon days you can still do yoga practice even if you take a break from the physical aspect of it. 🙏🏼🕊️

Meet Tao - assistant and apprentice at the shala since 2024. Tao came to ashtanga yoga when searching for a way to deal with stress and pressure at work. The method of ashtanga helped her find her inner balance again and gave her new energy.
Tao is currently assisting the morning mysore class on Friday mornings. Aside from learning about yoga and how to assist, she also is a keen student of the Swedish language 👩🏻‍🎓🧘🏻‍♀️

Meet Viktor - another of our shala assistants. Viktor likes to see things from a different perspective and that’s one of the reasons he finds the ashtanga yoga method attractive.

Viktor is tech savvy guy and works as an audio engineer. He frequently travels internationally for work, but nowadays he always carries his yoga mat with him on his travels 🧘🏼‍♂️

Happy Friday everyone - enjoy the long weekend 🕊️ Please remember that on Sunday 7th September it’s full moon and we take a break from teaching and practicing yoga-asana. Welcome back to morning mysore class on Monday 8th September 🙏🏼
Did you know that the posture Raja Kapotasana - the “king pigeon pose” from the end of the ashtanga yoga advanced A series- is named after the Rajapaksa pigeon, which is known for its grace and poise? Throughout Indian history, pigeons or doves are considered important symbols of communication and messengers of peace, love and loyalty. They play significant roles in tales of Indian mythology such as the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Skanda Purana.
We could need more messengers of peace in today’s society; as yoga practitioners we can begin by setting a good example and practice yoga off the mat in terms of doing no harm (ahimsa) and being honest and truthful (satya) in thought, speech and action. Ahimsa and Satya are two of the five Yamas, moral principles of yoga philosophy. Maybe begin by reflecting upon and noticing your own behaviour, way of expression and thinking over the weekend. When are you causing harm to yourself or your environment? Are you being truthful? What message do your actions, words or thoughts/body language send to others (intentionally or unintentionally). Can you change your approach to have a more positive or peaceful impact (if needed)? 🙏🏼☮️
