An incentive for centralization of diagnostic testing is the possibility to improve testing efficiency, while lowering the cost per test. However, there are situations where near-patient testing can be of greater benefit to the patient. Not only is on-site testing convenient for the patient, omitting the need to travel a longer distance to a site for blood sampling and testing. On-site testing can also be crucial for reducing turnaround time in case quick response is required to meet urgent clinical needs. Scientists have found a correlation of PFAS concentrations and hematology parameters in Amur tigers in China. Veterinary hematology differs from human hematology, in that the hematopoietic cells differ between animals species and breeds. These differences include variation in cell composition, morphology and size, but also some species unique cell types such as heterophils in birds. For additional complexity, different species also show different response to stimuli and stress. All together, these variations pose challenges to veterinary hematology. Anemia is one of the most common diagnoses globally among both human and veterinary patients. It is a health state closely linked to the RBC indices, where low HCT and HGB are very strong indicators. To further investigate the root cause of the anemia, the clinician often expands the initial hematology assessment to include also a manual smear, to look at morphological changes in the RBC, and specialized tests, such as clinical chemistry. Automated hematology analyzers are frequently used in clinical laboratories to assess and monitor health condition of patients. Although 3-part hematology analyzers provide sufficient information for most clinical settings, trends show an increased interest in 5-part instruments. While 5-part analyzers offer improved assessment of white blood cells, 3-part instruments offer great cost benefits.
