World Federation Against Drugs, WFAD

World Federation Against Drugs, WFAD WFAD aims for a drug free world. The World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) is a multilateral community of non-governmental organisations and individuals.

WFAD is democratically organised with an International Board consisting of two representatives from each world region: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Oceania as well as an International President. Founded in 2009, the aim of WFAD is to work for a drug-free world. The members of the WFAD share a common concern that illicit drug use is undercutting traditional values and threatening the existence of stable families, communities, and government institutions throughout the world. The work of the WFAD is built on the principles of universal fellowship and basic human and democratic rights. We believe that working for a drug-free World will promote peace and human development and dignity, democracy, tolerance, equality, freedom and justice. WFAD aims to strengthen prevention, increase access to treatment, and promote recovery!

Our Global Gender Committee Member, Tracey Ford, published her remarkable and inspiring Memoir "Blood is Thicker than Alcohol". The book dives into her personal story as a family member of someone facing an addiction while also sharing her personal addiction story. Without judgment or stigma, it showcases the strength and possibility of recovery, highlighting that even if recovery is an individual journey, it cannot be done alone.

The book has received numerous positive reviews and is worth reading to understand not only the person and possible triggers behind addiction but also the journey and power of recovery. It is now available on Amazon! https://bit.ly/48YzP6T

Today, we commemorate World Mental Health Day, a reminder that “there is no health without mental health”.

Too often, both young people and adults are unable to access the mental health support they need. Mental health challenges are closely linked to substance use, and we continue to see both on the rise.

This year’s theme highlights the urgent need to ensure access to care, especially during catastrophes and emergencies: times when services are most disrupted, and traumatic experiences are most acute.

We must strengthen preparedness, ensure continuity of care, and support those who need it most.
Because no one should be left behind. 💚

Yesterday, the CND Thematic Intersessionals kicked off and will be held until October 2nd, 2025. During the first thematic discussion "Prevention as a core element of the public health response to drug use", WFAD was honoured to contribute on behalf of the Child Protection Working Group.

We highlighted the importance of prevention and the need for continuous investments - especially in times in which we see a reduction of funding and an increase in conflict and mental health challenges. Drug demand reduction is an essential component and should not be overshadowed by supply reduction.

Today, we commemorate - a Day celebrating the resilience, hope, and transformation of people who have overcome addiction and moved toward meaningful, thriving lives. Our Global Gender Committee has released a statement highlighting women, showcasing their challenges, why they matter, and how we can support them globally.

It also shares empowering best practices. Such as:
- The memoir "Blood Is Thicker Than Alcohol" by Tracey Ford
- The research paper "What constitutes a woman’s recovery from addiction?"
- The book "Women’s Recovery Capital Pathways"

These works demonstrate that women in recovery are not passive recipients of care; they are knowledge producers, storytellers, and leaders of change. Their agency is central.

Let us commit together to amplifying and sustaining women’s recovery journeys, not just for this day, but for every day that follows.
