The Spiritual Essence of Abhyanga Snana on Naraka Chaturdashi 🪔
Today marks Naraka Chaturdashi, the sacred day before Diwali — a time for cleansing, renewal, and the victory of light over darkness.
At dawn, many across India perform Abhyanga Snana, the traditional Ayurvedic oil bath — not merely to purify the body, but to awaken the mind and spirit.
But have you ever wondered why this ritual is so significant?
According to legend, Naraka Chaturdashi commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura — a symbolic triumph of light over darkness.
It is said that in his final moments, Narakasura realized the harm he had caused and asked that his death be remembered as the end of negativity and the dawn of inner light.
Thus, this day reminds us to let go of all that is heavy, dark, and limiting — and to step into clarity, kindness, and renewal.
Abhyanga Snana, the ritual oil bath, helps us embody this transformation.
Massaging the body with warm sesame oil before bathing calms the nervous system, improves circulation, removes fatigue, and prepares the body for the cooler Vata season.
Traditionally, the body is gently scrubbed with herbal Ubtan — a blend of grains, herbs, and aromatic powders — to exfoliate and purify before the oiling.
The result? A sense of deep grounding, freshness, and joy — ready to welcome the festival of Diwali, the celebration of inner light.
Every ritual in Ayurveda carries meaning — a reminder that true beauty and health begin with awareness.
If this inspired you, share the light. ✨
