📍 Teaching Global Health through the Lens of Antibiotic Resistance

Last week, ReAct and Antibiotic Smart Sweden had the opportunity to meet with passionate teachers at a special event hosted by the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.

The event introduced educators to new ways of teaching about global health and antibiotic resistance.

🎥 The day concluded with film screenings and a museum tour - blending science, culture, and pedagogy in a truly inspiring way.

We hope to see antibiotic resistance and global health take a more prominent place in school curricula across the world.

👉🏾 Hand hygiene.

🌍 “Collaborating with ReAct has been a unique opportunity to connect community action with public health policy in our Region.”

As part of ReAct’s 20-year celebration, we’re honored to share this powerful reflection from Dr. Nathalie El Omeiri, Advisor, Special AMR Program at PAHO Washington D.C.

She reminds us that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) isn’t just a scientific issue - it’s a community challenge that requires art, play, learning, and policy to come together.

🗣️ “Antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat that jeopardizes the equity and sustainability of our health systems, especially in vulnerable populations. I will never forget the excitement of seeing girls and boys, from Quito to Medellin, learn about bacteria, handwashing, and proper antibiotic use through play and art: a living demonstration of the transformative power of empowered communities.”

Thank you, Nathalie, for your leadership and your deep commitment to inclusive, grassroots action in the fight against AMR. 🙌

NEW REPORT!

World Health Organization (WHO) warns of widespread resistance to common antibiotics worldwide.

Antimicrobial resistance continues to rise as a major global health challenge, weakening the effectiveness of life-saving treatments and increasing risks from everyday infections and routine medical care.

New data from over 100 countries, reported through the WHO Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS), highlight growing resistance to essential antibiotics - a growing threat to global health.

The report is supported by new interactive content on the GLASS dashboard, featuring global summaries, country profiles, and AMR insights.

🧬 “Two decades ago, only microbiologists and infectious disease professionals knew about the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Today, thanks to ReAct, communities, schools, people in the countryside and in the city know the importance of AMR and their responsibility to contain it.”

– Dr. Pilar Ramon-Pardo, Chief of the Special Program on AMR, PAHO Washington D.C.

As we celebrate 20 years of ReAct, we are honored to share this message from Dr. Pilar Ramón-Pardo of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Her words reflect the impact of sustained collaboration and bottom-up engagement in addressing antimicrobial resistance:

✨ “The partnership with ReAct has been strategic for -WHO. Together, we’ve joined forces to improve the appropriate use of antimicrobials, hygiene, and the acceptance of vaccination in communities.”

🌍 She reminds us that without ReAct’s leadership, community engagement on AMR with a One Health perspective—such as the efforts demonstrated during the 2024 UN General Assembly side event—would not have been possible.

🙏 “Thank you, Arturo Quizhpe and Otto Cars.”
