The importance of local leadership in addressing AMR 🌏

In the Jahangirpuri slum in New Delhi, India, we saw the power of local engagement. While campaigns build awareness, the foundation is everyday local action.

Through the React Asia Pacific Antibiotic Smart Community initiative, local women are proving that leadership begins at home.

Here’s what we learned:

Prevention is key: Access to water, hygiene, and sanitation helps reduce antibiotic use.

Context matters: Poverty and gender roles shape how medicines are used.

Empowerment works: Local voices share knowledge.

Vaccines play a critical role in efforts to address antibiotic resistance

During World Immunization Week 2026, we reflect on how vaccines protect us throughout life.

The connection between immunization and antibiotic resistance is direct:
-Fewer infections lead to decreased need for antibiotics.
-Reduced antibiotic use leads to slower development of resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is not just about treating infections. It is about preventing them in the first place.

This is why prevention must remain at the top of the global health agenda

AMR on the agenda at ESCMID 2026

As ESCMID Global 2026 wraps up in Munich, ReAct joined one of the key global forums shaping the future of antimicrobial resistance .
Beyond a leading scientific congress, ESCMID continues to be an important space to exchange across disciplines, from research to policy and implementation.
What emerged clearly this year is that AMR remains high on the global agenda, but the context around it is shifting.

Earlier this week colleagues from two of the ReAct nodes met in person. ReAct Europe had the pleasure of hosting Natasha Kaputula and Olen Hamatanga from ReAct Africa, together with ITP fellows from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) to share experiences and discuss.

The ITP Fellows group includes participants from Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Rwanda, with diverse backgrounds across animal health, food systems, and AMR - representing academia, authorities, the private sector, and NGOs.

We presented ReAct’s work, including our Community Priorities Survey ahead of the Abuja 2026 AMR Ministerial Meeting, and discussed AMR communication. In group discussions, we focused on how to engage stakeholders in different regional contexts and what key messages could resonate most.

It was especially great for ReAct colleagues from different corners of the world to meet in person - leading to open, thoughtful, and high‑quality discussions - and some laughs. :)

Many thanks to the whole group for an engaging visit! 🫶
