ReAct is happy to have participated at the EU-JAMRAI Annual Meeting in Vienna 🇦🇹 “Building a One Health world to reduce Antimicrobial Resistance”

ReAct Europe Director Anna Karin Sjöblom delivered a keynote. Her talk, “Beyond plans and promises, how to make action on antibiotic resistance really happen?”, shared examples from ReAct’s global work and highlighted what it takes to move from science to policy to action: participatory, bottom-up approaches, re-contextualization, capacity building, strong infrastructure, and sustained political will.

It’s inspiring to see how EU-JAMRAI focuses on responsibility and implementation at country level, bringing together multidisciplinary teams and practical approaches. With knowledge, tools, and funding in place, Europe can and should - reverse the rising mortality from resistant bacteria and protect antibiotic effectiveness for future generations.

While EU-JAMRAI is key for joint action in Europe, the region must also lead by example, contribute to the global efforts and engage with countries where the AMR burden is high but resources are very limited.

ReAct is ready to join forces and support this vital work.

Yesterday, ReAct had the honor to join the Gates Foundation Nordic Goalkeepers event in Stockholm, Sweden. One message echoed throughout the evening: “We can’t stop at ALMOST.”

Sweden’s Minister of Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, focused his speech on antibiotic resistance. He shared:

One week after becoming Health Minister of Sweden, I met Otto Cars from ReAct - Action on Antibiotic Resistance. Then it became clear to me: once you understand antibiotic resistance, you can never UN-understand it. Globally, we are not doing enough to address this challenge. Bacteria knows no borders, and global action is essential. At some point, this becomes personal. We all will know someone affected by resistant bacteria. We want a world where medicine still works - and where hope still lives.

Bill Gates later said that Sweden and the Nordic countries are setting the bar for global health leadership.

ReAct welcomes the announced SEK 550 million investment by the Gates Foundation, Novo Nordisk Foundation, and Wellcome Trust in new antibiotic research targeting gram-negative bacteria - and hope it signals the start of a sustained, long-term commitment.

We were also reminded of the power of community engagement through a powerful story from Margret Odera, an HIV survivor - proof that persistence, care, and local action save lives.

We can’t stop at ALMOST.
Challenges can be overcome.
Change can happen.

🌍 Stronger action on antibiotic resistance in 2026!

ReAct is focusing on 6 key areas to protect antibiotics and safeguard global health:

➡The Road to Abuja – stronger governance
➡ Putting communities at the heart of One Health
➡ Strengthening youth leadership
➡ Empowering learning and responsible use
➡ Supporting countries in conflict, crises and fragility
➡ Innovation that puts public health first

Collaboration, community engagement, and innovation are at the heart of these priorities - because protecting antibiotics means protecting everyone.

(AMR) threatens to undo decades of progress in treating infectious diseases. To reinforce the regional and global response to AMR, World Health Organization (Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office) and ReAct - Action on Antibiotic Resistance have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will:

🔵support AMR national action plans
🔵strengthen AMR governance and multisectoral coordination
🔵promote antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control in health facilities
🔵advance awareness, behavioural change and risk communication and community engagement campaigns
🔵facilitate knowledge sharing, joint technical missions and regional policy dialogue
🔵advocate for equitable access to diagnostics, antimicrobials and capacity-building resources
