Psyche has its own laws in how it functions both consciously and unconsciously, and it is dependant on bodily perceptions and how these are shaped by social, cultural and environmental practices and conditions, including normative expectations by the group that the individual belongs to.
Didier Anzieu follows in the footsteps of both phenomenological philosophy and earlier psychoanalysts' focus on the body to anchor the development of our psyche in the early sensorial experience that the infant makes via the skin, and contact with the mother and other caregivers. The early perceptions of our bodies' envelop first establish how we are separate entities and relate to others and to the world, and it is the first process to establish also a secure psychic envelop.
Anzieu identifies how several problems stem from how this skin boundary has been acquired and is in the present punctured, injured, or too rigid so that our boundaries with others mirror pathologies in our relating.
