You can’t google your back pain away.

If you google “how to get rid of lower back pain”, you will get a ton of the SAME exercises..

The issue with this is all back pain aren’t the same.

You won’t have the same:
- fitness level
- exercise experience
- lifestyle and habits
- etc

The worst thing is even after you do those exercises, your back pain got worse..

So what now?

What you can do is to seek for a professional who can:

1️⃣ Give a thorough assessment

- History taking is important to find out what might contribute to your pain

- Finding out your lifestyle, fitness levels, goals, etc

2️⃣ Implement activities based on your starting conditions

- Giving someone sedentary with little coordination a complex activity is a sure way to fail

3️⃣ Progress you to meet the demands your favourite

- Being able to run pain free requires different demands compared to carrying groceries

- Do you think a plank or a glute bridge can help you match the demand of running?

While I was surprised, I was also grateful when my lower back pain client asked me..

”You don’t just look at my back, you assessed my feet and legs as well.

Why aren’t the other practitioners doing the same?”

I can’t speak for them.. but I understand that we tend to look at the “site of problem” as the “source of the problem”.

This can be helpful if we are repairing appliances - replace the parts that aren’t working well.

However, our body doesn’t work this way..

Once we appreciate that the lower back pain is usually a solution/strategy/result rather than a problem, we can then have a better understanding as to how to reduce this pain.

And it is usually due to poor management of weight distribution or center of mass.

Better assessment will then lead to better interventions and thus outcomes.

Stop letting fitness professionals tell you that you have lower back pain because you have weak glutes or core.

What you need is to learn how to manage your center of mass in upright positions.

Doing more glute bridges, planks, and clamshells will only get you better at….

You got it.. they will only get you better at doing glute bridges, planks and clamshells. (Surprise!)

Muscles are stupid. They react to positions.

Getting them “stronger” in isolation isn’t going to work.

If you are managing your center of mass better in upright positions, not only your lower back pain is going to improve, your glutes and core will work more efficiently as well.

If you don’t know how to manage your center of mass in an upright position..

Unless you don’t plan to stand on your feet.

If you want to have no back pain during hiking, playing with your kids, or just walking, you will need to learn how to manage your center of mass in an upright position. Period.

Getting out of pain is the first step, not the only step to getting back to your favourite activites.

Many people think that quick fixes such as doing some mobility drills, strengthening or even putting on some medical patches can take your lower back pain away for good.

But only to realise your lower back pain kept coming back.

And what happened after that:
☹️You blamed that your age is catching up
😔You accepted that having lower back pain is going to be part of your life
😢You stopped enjoying your favourite activities because it’s giving you more back pain

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

You deserve to be moving confidently and being carefree.

But you will need to train your body for this.

Stop relying on glute bridges to get rid of your lower back pain.

I get it that you are consistent and patient,

but just like what Albert Einstein said:

”Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

To think that strengthening your glutes while lying down can fix your lower back pain while standing up is like trying to ace your calculus test with only learning primary school math.

What you focus, expands.

While a “I don’t want..” goal can sound similar to a “I want..” goal, but what you focus is different.

One limits you, one makes you feel limitless.

Of course, the goals stated can be more specific but it’s just to make a comparison.

I will like to invite you to try asking yourself this instead when you find yourself setting “I don’t want..” goals.

“What do I want instead?”

It requires constant revision, updating and evolving of your current self.

Which means you will need to let go of certain attachments that brought you to where you are now.
