Today, 10th September 2024, is World Su***de Prevention Day.
Today, 10th September 2024, is World Su***de Prevention Day.
I have had the honour and privilege of working with and supporting individuals struggling with suicidal ideation, intention, or plans to end their lives since my Social Work Internship at Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) in 1992, during my undergraduate studies in the Social Work & Psychology Department, at the National University of Singapore (1990-1993).
Over 31 years of clinical practice as a Registered Psychologist (SPS), Registered Social Worker (SASW), and Registered Counsellor (SAC), I have delivered numerous talks, workshops, and webinars, and have appeared 21 times on Channel News Asia as a Specialist TV Guest, twice on the topic of Su***de in 2017 & 2019.
Yet, what is most gratifying for me is journeying with my clients/patients through their darkest moments of helplessness and hopelessness. When those who were planning or on the brink of executing their death wish, find the strength to turn around, as I facilitate them to uncover the root causes of their pain, and transform their suffering, grief, and loss into a renewed will and purpose to live, it is truly life-giving. Witnessing their ability to transcend through equipping their inner resources and build upon their resilience, is the most rewarding aspect of my clinical therapeutic work.

My CNA Interview I gave on 29th July 2019 on "Su***de in Singapore in 2018".

With the announcement that the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) will be "updated," "refreshed," and expanded to "support a wider group of pupils," I would like to share my experience supporting GEP students throughout my 31 years of psychological counselling. This includes 3 years (1994-96) as a School Social Worker and 10 years (1997-2006) as the School Counsellor at St. Joseph's Institution, where I had the distinction of being Singapore's first full-time professionally trained school counsellor.

I was honoured to serve as one of the two Keynote Speakers at the GEP's 20th Anniversary Parents' Seminar on "Nurturing the Highly Able: Role of Parents", held on 5th June 2004. In my presentation, "Being the Nurturing Parent My Child Needs," I shared insights drawn from both my extensive experience and research back then. I emphasized the importance of parents being equipped with specialized knowledge and advanced parenting skills to effectively support their highly able children, who often require different approaches compared to their peers.

I highlighted the necessity for parents to be attuned to their child's unique cognitive abilities and less typical attitudes and behaviors. These children often require a nuanced understanding to navigate their growing needs and distinct learning styles. This is precisely why the Ministry of Education (MOE) has established a dedicated GEP Branch with trained specialists to support teachers and students in GEP schools.

During my keynote, I provided specific parenting strategies for fathers, mothers, and as co-parenting team, offering guidance on how to better care for and nurture their highly able children. I also stressed the importance of recognizing that, despite their cognitive brightness, these children may require patience and guidance in other developmental areas, such as social-emotional growth. Both parents and teachers play crucial roles in nurturing these aspects alongside academic development.

I will be delving deeper into this topic in my upcoming discussions, including insights from my personal experience as a parent, as my own son went through the GEP.
