In any situation when your skin has been injured, from infections, cuts, burns or surgery, a scar will be formed. Asians, in particular are at higher risk of hyper-pigmented scars, hypertrophic scarring and keloid formation.
A keloid is characterised as a raised cluster of scar tissue and grows beyond the original border of the injury. Hyper-pigmented scars appear darker than original skin colour and the risk of hyper-pigmentation increases with prolonged healing, infection and inflammation.
To manage these scars effectively, a multi-pronged approach to treatment is usually required, such as surgical revision, laser therapy with the appropriate laser wavelength, injections like steroids and botox, and self-maintenance with scar tape or scar gel and wearing of suitable pressure garments.
