The advent of a calendar year marks a new beginning, and with it comes hope to turn over a new leaf. It is a time to reflect on the things we have done the previous year and to try to improve and better “ourselves.”
Each one of us has a goal and we work hard to achieve it. Some were able to attain what they have set and are now aiming towards a new one, while others are struggling to go for it.
Different people aim to improve in contrasting areas.
One may want to enhance their physical appearance by doing different procedures- going to the gym, sauna, aesthetic doctors or some would even go to great lengths to go for a reconstructive surgery.
Others would want to improve their mental expertise- taking further studies in the field they are undertaking, honing their craft, or even acquiring new skills.
Some would try to engage in acquiring wealth and prosperity.
Others who are more contemplative would seek to improve their character for the better. How they behave or act. How they deal with others. For those types of people, character plays a much more intrinsic value.
But for someone who really seeks wisdom, this New Year is the time to really introspect and seek to find answers to the questions- Who am I? What is the purpose of my existence? What is the actual goal of life.?
If we analyze deeper, even if we can have all the things we want, it will only bring about temporary satisfaction. No amount of material things will be able to satisfy us, even if we can consume the whole world.
If we are not connected to that actual source of happiness, then the pleasure we would try to seek would be in the wrong direction. One would still feel empty inside.
If we can understand our real essence, that we are the living being, the life force, the soul, temporarily having a human experience, this could make a profound difference in our lives.
It is not that we are our material bodies and we possess a soul but rather we are the soul temporarily residing in our bodies. We are all parts and parcels of the Supreme Being and we can only be truly happy and satisfied when we are serving the Supreme Person.
Everything here in the world is temporary and is all destined to come to an end, so we have to really introspect, for whatever actions we perform whether pious or sinful will certainly create an indelible ink on the outcome of what our lives would be. The choice is ours to make…
