Why does the physician ask parents to continue bringing their children for paediatric massage?

Everyone wants their children to "grow up quickly". You might wonder though, why does the physician recommend continuous and regular paediatric massage, instead of just one or two times?

This is related to the conditioning logic of traditional Chinese medicine and the characteristics of children's growth and development:

1. Paediatric massage is not a "special medicine", but "conditioning the body constitution"
The core of traditional Chinese medicine is "addressing the root cause"
The root cause of children's slow growth and weak constitution is often poor spleen and stomach function (weak digestion and absorption), insufficient kidney qi (congenital or acquired consumption), or liver qi discomfort (emotional stress affects growth).
The role of massage: by stimulating meridian acupoints, gradually adjust the function of internal organs, such as:

Nourishing the spleen meridian → enhance the spleen and stomach transportation, and absorb nutrients more fully

Spinal massage → stimulating kidney qi and promote bone growth

Massaging the abdomen → improve digestion and avoid "stomach disharmony and restlessness"

But the adjustment of internal organs takes time! It takes several months to see the results of the regular, consistent massage. It is impossible to "fertilize today and get fruits tomorrow".

Children's physiological characteristics: "The internal organs are delicate; and the body is not fully developed".

The child's body is like a young sapling. Although it is strong to repair itself, it is also easily affected by the outside world (such as eating the wrong food, sleeping poorly, and mood swings).

Short-term massage: It may temporarily relieve symptoms (such as a better appetite), but it is easy for conditions to come back.

Long-term regular massage: Only in this way can the effect be consolidated and the child's physique can really "step up".

2. Why should we persist? Here is the scientific basis!
The secretion of growth hormone is a continuous process
Children's growth depends on the pulsed secretion of growth hormone (especially at night), and massage can indirectly optimize this process by regulating sleep, spleen and stomach, and endocrine. However, the improvement of hormone secretion requires at least 1 to 3 months of accumulation.

Clinical data support
Paediatric massage for more than 3 months has a significant increase in the growth rate of children with short height (an average of 0.3 to 0.5 cm per month), but the short-term effect (such as 1 month) is not obvious.

III. Answers to parents’ common questions
❓ “After a few massages, the child’s appetite has improved. Can I stop?”
→ It is recommended to keep coming for the massage treatment! When the spleen and stomach have just recovered, they need continuous maintenance to stabilize. Stopping suddenly may return the baby’s body to the starting point.

❓ “Do I need to massage regularly even if the child is not sick?”
→ Yes! Chinese medicine emphasizes “preventive treatment”. For example:

Health massage once a week (such as nourishing the spleen meridian + doing spinal massage)

Strengthen during the change of seasons (such as promoting growth in spring and regulating the spleen and stomach in the dog days)

❓ “Can I massage at home by myself?”
→ Sometimes some basic techniques can be done at home under the guidance of a doctor or massage therapist (such as abdominal massage and spinal pinching), but professional doctors can dynamically adjust the plan according to the child’s physique (such as adding stomach meridian clearing when the tongue coating is thick, and pushing down the seven sacral bones when constipated).

IV. Cooperate with these things, the effect will be faster!
Record the growth curve: measure height once a month and observe the trend more important than single data.

Avoid "hidden harm": such as eating too much before bedtime, over-tutoring, criticizing children for "slow growth" (stress inhibits growth hormone).

Seize the Spring. March to May is the golden period for growth, and the frequency of massage can be increased to 2 to 3 times a week.

Summary

Paediatric massage is like "charging the body", which can only be used for a few days after charging. Long-term regular "endurance" can completely improve the child's physique. Doctors recommend continuous conditioning, precisely to allow children to not only "temporarily grow taller” but also develop a physique that is "not easy to get sick, can eat and sleep", which is a long-term plan!

为什么医师会叫家长们持续带孩子来做小儿推拿呢？

有哪位家长不希望孩子“快高长大”呢？

为什么医师会建议持续、规律地做小儿推拿，而不是一两次就见效呢？

这其实和中医的调理逻辑、儿童生长发育的特点密切相关：

一、小儿推拿不是“特效药”，而是“调理体质”
中医的核心是“治本”
孩子长得慢、体质弱，根本原因往往是脾胃功能差（消化吸收弱）、肾气不足（先天或后天消耗）、或肝气不舒（情绪压力影响生长）。
推拿的作用：通过刺激经络穴位，逐步调整脏腑功能，比如：

补脾经→增强脾胃运化，营养吸收更充分

捏脊→激发肾气，促进骨骼生长

揉腹→改善积食，避免“胃不和则卧不安”

但脏腑的调整需要时间！就像种庄稼，施肥后也要等几个月才能丰收，不可能“今天施肥明天结果”。

儿童的生理特点：“脏腑娇嫩，形气未充”。

孩子的身体像一棵小树苗，虽然修复能力强，但也很容易受外界影响（比如吃错东西、睡不好、情绪波动）。

短期推拿：可能暂时缓解症状（比如胃口变好），但容易反弹。

长期规律推拿：才能巩固效果，让孩子的体质真正“上台阶”。

二、为什么要坚持？科学依据在这里！
生长激素的分泌是持续过程
孩子长高依赖生长激素的脉冲式分泌（尤其是夜间），而推拿通过调节睡眠、脾胃和内分泌，能间接优化这一过程。但激素分泌的改善需要至少1~3个月的积累。

临床数据支持
持续3个月以上的小儿推拿，对身高偏矮儿童的生长速度有显著提升（平均每月多长0.3~0.5cm），但短期（如1个月）效果不明显。

三、家长常见疑问解答
❓ “推拿几次后孩子胃口好了，可以停了吗？”
→ 建议巩固！脾胃刚恢复时就像“松过的土壤”，需要持续养护才能稳定。突然停止可能回到原点。

❓ “孩子没生病，也要定期推拿吗？”
→ 是的！中医讲究“治未病”。比如：

每周1次保健推拿（如补脾经+捏脊）

换季时加强（如春季助长，三伏天调理脾胃）

❓ “能不能自己在家推拿？”
→ 有时候一些基本手法，经医师或推拿师的指导下（如摩腹、捏脊）可以在家做，但专业医师能根据孩子体质动态调整方案（比如舌苔厚时加清胃经，便秘时推下七节骨）。

四、配合这些事，效果更快！
记录生长曲线：每月量一次身高，观察趋势比单次数据更重要。

避免“隐性伤害”：比如睡前吃太饱、过度补习、批评孩子“长得慢”（压力会抑制生长激素）。

抓住“猛长期”：春季（3~5月）是长高黄金期，推拿频率可增加到每周2~3次。

总结
小儿推拿像“给身体充电”，充一次只能用几天，长期规律“续航”才能让孩子体质彻底升级。医师建议持续调理，正是为了让孩子不仅“暂时长高”，更养成“不易生病、能吃能睡”的体质，这才是长远之计！

According to traditional Chinese medicine, children's growth and development are closely related to the fullness of kidney essence, healthy spleen and stomach, and liver qi. The kidney is responsible for bone and marrow production, the spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood biochemistry, and the liver is responsible for dredging and affects the rise and fall of qi. Through pediatric massage, diet conditioning and daily routine adjustment, it can promote the fullness of qi and blood, and the harmony of internal organs, thereby helping children's growth and development. The following are specific methods:

1. Pediatric massage to promote growth

Pediatric massage regulates the functions of internal organs by stimulating meridian acupoints. It is especially suitable for children with weak constitution or spleen and stomach disorders.

2. Diet conditioning: Dietary therapy for strengthening the spleen and kidney

Spleen-strengthening porridge
10 grams each of yam, lotus seeds, Qianshi, Fuling, and pumpkin, 50 grams of polished rice, cook porridge for consumption.
Suitable for: children with weak spleen and stomach and poor appetite.

Kidney-tonifying soup
30 grams of black beans, 15 grams of walnut kernels, pork bones or chicken, stew soup 1~2 times a week.
Note: Those with yin deficiency and fire (dry mouth, constipation) should reduce the frequency.

What not to eat?

Avoid raw and cold (such as ice cream), fried foods and excessive sweets to prevent damage to the spleen and stomach.

3. What we can do better every day

Sleep
Make sure to fall asleep before 9 pm. Growth hormone is secreted most vigorously during deep sleep (especially from 10 pm to 1 am).
Exercise
Do vertical exercises such as skipping rope, jumping jacks, basketball, etc. for 30 minutes every day to stimulate bone growth.
Emotions
Avoid excessive scolding. Liver qi stagnation may affect digestion and sleep.

4. What else to take note?

Pediatric massage is suitable for children under 6 years old. The younger the age, the more obvious the effect. Children over 6 years old can be treated by moxibustion.
Syndrome differentiation: If the child has long-term developmental delay, it is necessary to adjust the plan in combination with Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation (such as whether it is accompanied by night sweats, constipation, allergies, etc.).

中医认为，儿童生长发育与肾精充盛、脾胃健运、肝气调达密切相关。肾主骨生髓，脾胃为气血生化之源，肝主疏泄而影响气机升降。通过小儿推拿、饮食调理和生活作息调整，可以促进气血充盈、脏腑调和，从而助力儿童生长发育。以下是具体方法：

一、小儿推拿促生长关键手法
小儿推拿通过刺激经络穴位，调节脏腑功能，尤其适合体质较弱或脾胃失调的儿童。以下为常用手法（每日1次，每次10~15分钟）：
1. 补脾经
o 位置：拇指桡侧缘（外侧），从指尖到指根。
o 操作：用拇指沿儿童拇指外侧缘向指根方向直推100~300次。
o 作用：健脾益气，增强消化吸收功能。
2. 揉板门
o 位置：手掌大鱼际中央。
o 操作：拇指按揉50~100次。
o 作用：消食化积，改善食欲不振。
3. 摩腹
o 位置：腹部（以肚脐为中心）。
o 操作：掌心顺时针摩腹3~5分钟，逆时针1~2分钟（便秘者单用顺时针）。
o 作用：调理脾胃，促进肠道蠕动。
4. 捏脊
o 位置：背部脊柱两侧，从尾骨至大椎穴（颈后隆起处）。
o 操作：拇指与食指捏起皮肤，自下而上捏提3~5遍，最后按揉肾俞穴（腰部第二腰椎棘突旁开1.5寸）30秒。
o 作用：振奋阳气、强肾壮骨，是促生长的核心手法。
5. 按揉足三里
o 位置：膝盖外侧凹陷下3寸（约儿童四横指宽度）。
o 操作：拇指按揉50~100次。
o 作用：补益脾胃，增强体质。
6. 手解
o 位置：掌朝上，于小指掌骨与无名指掌骨之间，握拳时小指尖所触之处。
o 操作：按揉100~300次。
o 作用：具备促进脑下垂体、生长激素、脑神经皮质分泌之作用。

二、饮食调理：健脾益肾的食疗方
1. 健脾粥
o 山药、莲子、芡实、茯苓、南瓜各10克，粳米50克，煮粥食用。
o 适合：脾胃虚弱、食欲差的儿童。
2. 补肾汤
o 黑豆30克、核桃仁15克、猪骨或鸡肉适量，炖汤每周1~2次。
o 注意：阴虚火旺（口干、便秘）者减少频率。
3. 忌口
o 避免生冷（如雪糕）、油炸食品及过量甜食，以防损伤脾胃。

三、生活习惯调整
1. 睡眠
o 确保晚上9点前入睡，生长激素在深度睡眠时（尤其是晚上10点-凌晨1点）分泌最旺盛。
2. 运动
o 每天跳绳、跳高、篮球等纵向运动30分钟，刺激骨骼生长。
3. 情绪
o 避免过度责骂，肝气郁结可能影响消化和睡眠。

四、注意事项
• 年龄：推拿适用于6岁以下儿童，年龄越小效果越明显，大过6岁的小孩可通过艾灸的方式治疗。
• 辨证：若儿童长期发育迟缓，需结合中医辨证（如是否伴有盗汗、便秘、过敏等）调整方案。
• 配合西医检查：排除生长激素缺乏、甲状腺功能减退等病理因素。

Recently, the weather turned cooler. There is a lot of 'wet' around us. There are more children who are down with colds. Usually, the initial cold might be caused by the child's reaction to the elements, particularly the cold weather and the rain. Besides, the cold might spread in the child's preschool. Common symptoms of children cold include: nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy nose, restless sleep at night, itchy skin, etc.

The following briefly introduces several methods to relieve the baby's cold quickly:

(1) With 3 slices of ginger and 3 scallions, boil water for 15 minutes and then add red sugar. Drink the mixture.

(2) With 10 grams of perilla leaves and 10 grams of mugwort leaves. Boil them with water. When the water is warm, have the child bathe in the water.

(3) You can use your finger tips and knead on your child's Fei Shu acupoints for 50-100 times. .

If the child'scold does not get better after using the above methods, or the condition worsens, it is best the child consult with a Chinese physician or medical professional..

近来天气转凉，湿气特别重，患感冒的宝宝明显增多，通常初患感冒是由于着凉较多，在幼儿园交叉感染也不少。常见症状为：鼻塞、打喷嚏、鼻子痒、夜睡不宁、皮肤痒等。

以下简单介绍几种让宝宝感冒较快缓解的方法：

（1）生姜3片、葱白3棵。煮水沸腾15分钟后加赤塘当水喝
（2）紫苏叶10克、艾叶10克、煮水沸腾后稍温洗澡
（3）可以用小儿推拿，开天门、推坎宫、揉迎香、揉肺俞

若使用以上的方法宝宝感冒没有缓解，或病情加重，宝宝必须去看中西医。
