Sleep is only possible when the yin cradles the yang energy. Sleeplessness could be in the form of not being able to fall asleep or waking up 3-4 times in a 8-hour sleeping period or having multiple intensely frightening dreams, making a person restless and tired during the waking hours. If this happens on average 3 times a week for over 2 months, a person is deemed to have insomnia.
