11-year-old girl, Ms Hu Zihan, a Red Cross youth volunteer used the Heimlich manoeuvre (or abdominal thrust) to save a woman choking on bubble tea in China.

The Heimlich maneuver is a first-aid method for choking. Choking is when a person can’t breathe because food, a toy or another foreign item is blocking their throat or windpipe (trachea). Another name for the Heimlich maneuver is abdominal thrusts. You can use it in different ways on adults and children.

[Emergency Medical Services Appreciation Day]
Join us this Saturday, 17 May 2025, from 9am to 11am, for the 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗘𝗠𝗦) 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 at the four designated fire stations:

- Alexandra Fire Station
- Paya Lebar Fire Station
- Punggol Fire Station
- Jurong Fire Station

Held as part of EMS week, visitors can expect to learn more about SCDF’s EMS, basic lifesaving skills, and demonstration of different medical scenarios.

Incident Site: Blk 978 Jurong West Street 93, Singapore 640978

Community First Responders and Observations by:
4 - Roro Tiwari, Aidil, Chloe Chew and Kenneth 💪🏼
Emergency Appliances (if any): Singapore Civil Defence Force appliances A413 and PL412
Hospital Conveyed to (if any): H9 - Ng Teng Fong General Hospital

Other Observations (if any): CFRs arrived on scene safely and identified themselves on-site.

A ZOLL Medical AED was retrieved from the Lifesavers Emergency Point at Blk 978 and utilised in this resuscitation case and effort.

CFRs proceeded to perform at least 3 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) cycles, and were able to administer 1 shock delivered from the ZOLL automated external defibrillator or AED.

SCDF Officers and Paramedics soon quickly arrived and took over the care of the patient. EMS were informed and the AED set returned to SCDF on scene.

CFRs assisted where and when necessary, including keeping the corridor clear of people and obstruction, assisting with holding the lift to allow faster medical conveyance to the awaiting Alpha.

CFRs then stood down from active First Responder readiness, and retired from the scene.

We would like to thank our multiple teams of responders for their efforts during the recent alerted case in Jurong Point Shopping Centre.

Other Observations (if any): CFRs arrived on scene safely and after clarification, were able to locate the source of the complaint on the Level 1 of a fastfood restaurant.

The case was triaged to a conscious patient reported to had laid down.

As SCDF Paramedics and Officers had arrived on scene, CFRs then stood down from active First Responder readiness, and retired from the scene.
