Pilonidal disease is an infection from hairs embedded in the skin near the buttock cleft, resulting in red, painful swelling that may discharge blood or pus, and even fever in severe cases.

Treatment of pilonidal disease depends on the severity. In cases of an acute abscess, treatment may involve a small cut to discharge the pus and remove the hair.

However, for chronic abscesses, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove them completely.

Starting treatment early is best to prevent the worsening or recurrence of pilonidal disease. If you started noticing a painful pimple-like swelling near the buttock cleft with discharge of blood or pus, seek help from a colorectal specialist.

When an intestine protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal muscles and into the inguinal ca**l in the groin, an inguinal hernia can occur, forming a visible bulge along the p***c or groin area.

Symptoms include:
• A bulge that becomes more apparent when coughing or standing
• Pain or discomfort in the groin area
• Weakness or an aching feeling in the groin
• Swelling of the sc***um in men

Typically, a hernia will not resolve on its own, and surgical repair is required to return the displaced organ back in place and reinforce the weakened area, so as to prevent complications such as strangulation and obstruction.

Should you notice these symptoms, seek prompt assessment and treatment from a colorectal specialist.

Colorectal cancer may be one of the most common cancers in Singapore, but should it be detected and treated early, surgery offers the best chance of a cure.

Colorectal cancer surgery can be performed via an open or minimally invasive approach, where diseased portions of the colon or re**um are removed, along with lymph nodes where the cancer may have spread to. The remaining portions are then joined back together so that bowel motions can continue unaffected.

Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may also be given to enhance the cure rates of surgery and reduce the risks of recurrence.

For prompt and effective treatment of colorectal cancer, consult with a colorectal specialist today.

While many of us may experience occasional stomachache, a sudden and worsening pain in the lower right abdomen could be a sign of something more serious — appendicitis.

Appendicitis refers to the infection or inflammation of the appendix, resulting in intense pain in the lower right abdomen, along with nausea, vomiting and fever.

Appendicitis should be treated promptly to avoid serious complications as the inflamed appendix can rupture and release the bacteria trapped within, spreading the severe infection to the abdominal cavity, which can be fatal.

Should you experience symptoms of appendicitis, seek medical attention from a colorectal specialist immediately.

Piles, or haemorrhoids, is a condition that manifests as a lump in the a**l area, which can occur when blood vessels in the a**s become enlarged from excessive pressure.

While oral medications or suppositories, and taking more fluids or laxatives can help in relieving symptoms, especially for 1st- or 2nd-degree piles, more persistent and severe cases will warrant surgical treatment as the symptoms can adversely affect quality of life.

Haemorrhoidectomy is usually the definitive method of treatment for 3rd- and 4th-degree piles, where piles are removed or with the blood supply cut off, causing the piles to shrivel and fall off.

If you frequently experience pain, bleeding, and feeling a lump around the a**s, especially during bowel movements, reach out to a colorectal specialist for prompt treatment.

Hernias form when an organ becomes displaced and protrudes through a weakness in the surrounding tissue or muscle wall that holds it in place, which can cause a bulge, pain and discomfort in the navel or groin area.

Anything that results in increased abdominal pressure or weakened muscles may eventually give rise to a hernia.

Do note that a hernia will not resolve by itself and may run the risk of becoming strangulated or obstructed if left untreated.

Thankfully, hernias can be repaired with surgery, which may involve returning the displaced organ to its rightful position and reinforcing the weakened area.

If you notice a painful bulge in the groin or abdominal area, especially when coughing or standing, consult with a colorectal specialist.

Having been in the field of colorectal surgery for over two decades, 𝗗𝗿 𝗛𝗼 𝗞𝗼𝗸 𝗦𝘂𝗻 has dedicated his career to caring for patients with colorectal conditions.

With a strong interest in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, Dr Ho Kok Sun clears up some misconceptions surrounding 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿, one of the most common cancers in Singapore:

• “𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.”
While the majority of patients are in their 50s or older, there is a fair percentage who are in their 30s and 40s, and a smaller number in their 20s.

• “𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.”
With timely colonoscopies, colorectal cancer is highly preventable as abnormal polyps can be detected and removed before they have the chance to turn cancerous.

• “𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿.”
Most cases of colorectal cancer do not have symptoms in the early stages. Colon polyps, the precursor to cancer, also do not have symptoms.

Worried about bleeding during bowel movements? While spotting blood in stools can be scary, it’s actually not uncommon and is not always a cause for worry.

Nonetheless, one can always observe the pattern of bleeding and the extent of pain to give a better idea of the cause.

If the blood found is fresh, bright red, it may be a sign of bleeding from the a**s, symptomatic of conditions like constipation, piles or a**l fissures.

However, if the blood appears stale and wine-coloured, it may indicate bleeding in the small intestine or upper colon, caused by more serious conditions like diverticulosis or even colorectal cancer.

Seek medical attention from a colorectal specialist if bleeding occurs frequently and is accompanied by other symptoms.

Given the high prevalence of colorectal cancer, timely detection is key to keeping this common and highly curable cancer at bay.

Most colorectal cancer usually begins as small benign polyps that may turn cancerous over time without warning, making 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 a commonly used diagnostic tool as it allows for real-time visualisation of the inside of the colon and removal of potentially cancerous polyps.

If you are at the age of 50 or above, schedule a colonoscopy with a colorectal specialist today.

Screening at an earlier age is advisable if you have a family history of colorectal cancer.
