We’re aware of the quality decline when stalls become franchises, but this one’s the exception.

Started in the 50s, Jian Bo Shui Kueh is the most recognisable chwee kueh brand here. With their freshly steamed rice cakes and salty chai po (preserved daikon), aromated with seafood, shallots and garlic, is hard to beat.

While they have 17 outlets nationwide, we recommend you pay a visit to the original stall for the full experience.

Bold, rich and fragrant.

Boon Tong Kee has become a chicken rice staple in Balestier Road. With 20 years of experience, rice making and chopping of chicken has become a fine art. Drizzle some of that thick soy sauce over the meat and dip it into the tangy, chilli sauce to enjoy the meal to the fullest.

So honoured for Kf Seetoh to be one of the people that shaped Singapore’s food culture. From 27 years of publishing his hawker food guide, 2 decades of running the renown Makansutra Gluttons Bay next to the Marina Bay, the creator of the World Street Food Congress has given a voice to our beloved hawkers and aided in bringing the global spotlight directly towards them on the screens of local, regional and international channels with his Makansutra and Food Surprise TV series that helped set the street food culture alight.

Don’t be deceived by the clear stock.

This unassuming fish porridge isn’t the gloopy mess you think. With its rice grains still visible through the soup on top, it follows the old school Teochew style with some szechuan pickles and tee po ( dried sole fish bones) to dress it. The fish slices placed over your bowl range from pomfret, snapper and garoupa and come fresh, sweet and oh-so merry in the mouth.

You’d best give Ng Soon Kee Fish & Duck Porridge a visit before their owners hang up their boots. It’s a rare sight nowadays.

Nothing better than fresh ah boling with sweet, hot oozy peanut filling in a peanut soup to celebrate the end of a hard week. And yes, it’s in the same hawker centre Lady Gaga went to when she was here. abracadabra ohlalala

Honestly, we thought about gatekeeping this one.

Brewed and served fresh on order by a friendly couple, 1+kopi is the staple for coffee in the hawker centre. With its measured consistency, rounded kopi palette and faint chocolatey tones, you’ll never find a cup too sweet here.

They make a great ice lemon tea here too, with just the right levels of tang to quench your thirst and beat the weather! 🍋
