Sunlight is an underrated and free medicine for all of us!
VITAMIN D IS A HORMONE
We’ve been calling it the wrong thing the whole time!
By definition, Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone - how amazing!
Hormone D is synthesised by sunlight, and is then activated by the liver and kidneys into a form that acts through the endocrine system to regulate calcium metabolism
The cool thing is that researchers have found hormone D receptors outside the renal system - meaning that it has actions that spread beyond maintaining healthy bone density.
In fact, hormone D has been described as a ‘pluripotent’ hormone - meaning it has the ability to produce a variety of biological responses.
Hormone D, outside of calcium metabolism, acts on 5 main systems that comprise the “vitamin D endocrine system”
1. The innate immune system
2. The adaptive immune system
3. Insulin secretion by pancreatic beta-cells
4. Heart functioning and blood pressure regulation
5. Brain and foetal development
Hormone D comes from sunlight exposure, or dietary sources - in particular fatty fish and egg yolks.
Now, balancing sunlight exposure and vitamin D levels is definitely a thing - some folk just don’t like the sun, it burns - I get it!
There are sources that say light skinned people need 8 - 15 minutes exposure per day, and if you have darker skin you need a little longer.
In cases where sunlight exposure isn’t possible (eg risk of skin cancer, geographic limitations or you are a vampire), it’s pretty important to make sure you get it from your diet, or supplementation.
In a beautiful way - we are just like plants!
Where plants trap sunlight in order to photosynthesise, Vitamin D is also trapped sunlight metabolised inside the human body.

"It took me years to realize that Inca and pre-Columbian architecture is directly related to the structure of the corn kernels. In a western model of thought, one might judge the shapes as irregular, but in a universal thought, everything is a correlation between the cosmos, science, art and humanity. Fractal nature.
As you can see, the organic growth forms are represented in a logarithmic way, and the fact that these pentagonal, hexagonal and heptagonal blocks coincide with the corn forms." - Juan Casco
Note: The lack of symmetry in the walls helps dissipate the energy of the eartquakes. They were incredible engineers. Japanese researchers studied Machu Picchu after the Kobe earthquake and realized that these Inca structures had not been damaged by an earthquake.

As you know, every beauty article always mention the importance of sunscreen against skin cancer and premature ageing. We are all so afraid of the word "ageing" isnt it? As I was battling dull, congested skin back in my 20s, it was always very demoralising when I find new pimples after cleansing my SPF creams off.
Just 3 years ago, I have decided to stop using sunscreens completely and wanted to experiment using my oils on myself. If you look around and notice most guys around you dont even use anything on their faces, (and they hate them especially) but did they look like they've aged 10 years older? No, and they seriously have the best skin right haha.
Nature is really amazing. Plants are there for you to work with them, no matter where you are. Ethnobotany is the study of a region's plants and their practical uses through the traditional knowledge of a local culture and their people. It involves documenting local customs with the practical uses of local plants in many aspects of life, such as for medicines, foods, intoxicants and clothing etc. I began reading into the use of sun protection plants that people use in hot countries, such as Africa, South America, Brazil (Amazonian tribes), Polynesia and of course in our very own tropical South East Asia.
These plants are often used in the form of oils and butters, and are used all over the skin for sun care protection and skin protection against the harsh climate. Apart from nature's SPF, the locals also adorned turbans, scarves, mud/clay etc for extra practical protection. Science has not made much research on most of these oils and their SPF properties, but if such skincare practice has existed since thousands of years ago and is still being utilised today by the locals - I think it must be working pretty damn well :)
Based on my past 3 years of using SUNGLOW as my outdoor face oil in Singapore, I must say that my skin complexion has never been better. I haven't seen a single sun spot, or wrinkle on my face. I am most proud to say that using natural plant lipids for this purpose is 100% marine and coral friendly. This is the biggest action we can reciprocate back to Nature.

I would like to share about maximizing the shelf life of your oils, and also on proper storage methods so that these precious plant potions are able to retain its benefits/properties; always working to its best potential for you.
Lipid oils (true term for carrier oils) that are reddish-orangey in colour are the most sensitive, which means they are most prone to oxidation. Oxygen, direct sunlight/artificial LED light and heat are the enemies of these oils. So storage wise, always screw back cap after use and best to keep in a dark, cool area such as your closed door cabinet or drawer. Products like B-Carotene, Suncare, Sunglow, Aphrodite, Hera, Acne, B**b Mylk (new lactation breast massage oil for nursing moms!) are best to follow this as these are oils that are in the red-orange spectrum. Storing in the cooler is not necessary unless you don’t intend to use it for couple of months.
When oils go through oxidation, they become lighter in colour and may be slightly thicker in texture. At this stage it is still good to use, however you may feel like the product isn’t as effective as before? You feel like maybe your skin is “immune” and the product just doesn’t work for you anymore. Yes partially that’s true; the product has lost its therapeutic healing values through oxidation. It has exhausted its carotenoids (AKA anti-oxidants) from protecting itself from free radical damage and hence it can’t do the same for your skin anymore either. And that shows in the oil - the reddish hues from within the oil is gone which means the anti-oxidants are used up.
Fully oxidized oils are sticky and have a crayon-like, plasticky smell. This is fully rancid and is not suitable for use on skin. It will only cause skin itchiness or irritation.
Other products such as Arthritis, Muscle Care, and Eczema etc are a lot more stable because the lipid oils used are not anti-oxidant oils, but are chosen for their anti-inflammatory properties. And usually having this analgesic component also comes with self-preserving phytosterols that allow the oils to preserve themselves from oxidation.
True natural products can be troublesome as you will need to pay extra attention to its storage and how it behaves along the way. That’s why I always tell people that these oils are still living - they are as alive as the vegetables in your fridge :)
Lastly, whatever I’ve shared above are only applicable to unrefined pure lipid oils, cold pressed, hand pressed and CO2 extracted. It is a completely different story if the product uses refined oils. But that will be another sharing session for another time.
This end of year, VIZÜ has partnered up with a few new and old friends who are also small startups and businesses. Here are some of my favourite people who share similar ethos as VIZÜ - we believe in doing no harm to our planet and also onto ourselves!

These are free range eggs laid by home grown chickens. Photo was shared by someone from my herbal community in Facebook :) I just want to talk about how everything in nature is perfect and beautiful in their own ways. And natural products will ALWAYS vary in taste, texture, colour, smell etc. Be it eggs, fruits or vegetables, natural produce will never ever be the same/identical because every end product of a harvest will depend on the time of its season (eg some herbs are more nutritious during a certain season and a certain time of the day), climate changes, soil acidity and soil health, rainwater type (depending where the water condensation comes from and which direction the wind blows), and the list goes on.
It has many factors to contribute to every single harvest and this also applies to essential oils, botanical extracts and vegetal oils. It is normal, and also an indication of purity if your oils from different batches differ slightly :) however, the quality will always be as consistent and good, if you're buying from an honest manufacturer/supplier/company.
Those that are always in its "signature" or known-for scent are likely to be manipulated in the lab. The chemical compounds within the oil are adjusted to it's "standard/signature" ratio so that the scent is always constant batch after batch. This happens alot with lavender essential oil especially and it's because the big pharma and cosmeceutical companies want their mass produced end products to be identical. In agricultural terms, it's also known as farming GMO produce.
Just a random Thursday morning sharing :) have a good day y'all.

The original aromatherapy: the early scented gardens
From material necessity to aesthetic pleasure is a short step and historical records suggest that the first scented gardens were planted within the enclosed courtyards of Persian palaces over 2,500 years ago. These gardens were made not only to delight the senses but also to provide a spiritual sanctuary, quite apart from any practical benefits they conferred. Since the Koran taught that it was mankind’s duty to conserve and revere nature as part of the divine creation, these sacred gardens were looked upon as a means of recreating and experiencing heaven on earth.
The term ‘paradise’ derives from the Greek word paradeisos, which in turn was based on the Persian, pairidaeza, literally ‘surrounded by walls’. This referred to an enclosed garden of pleasure, an earthly paradise where both secular and sacred elements were intertwined.
The classical Persian garden was constructed to a formal plan within a square or rectangle, having a fountain in the centre from which four streams issued – one in each direction. The whole area was then carefully planted with fruit-bearing and fragrant trees, aromatic herbs and flowers, for the Persians required three main qualities in their paradise gardens: running water, shade and scent.

At Vizü, we care deeply about our environment and we are equally passionate in helping people (and animals!) who are suffering from chronic skin ailments and other health issues.
Before the creation of Vizü, our interest in plant oils and herbology have led us to many explorations - from supplements to food and nutrition, and also to skincare. Surrounded by loved ones and friends suffering from musculoskeletal pains, psoriasis, eczema and physical urticaria.
Vizü empathises with the trauma and discomfort which comes with these conditions. Years of researching, studying and sampling have led us to alleviate the effects of these conditions, and we are very humbled by the encouraging results shown through the natural healing of plants.
Our skin absorbs about 60% of what we put on it, and children absorb even more as their skin is delicate and sensitive, therefore it is extremely crucial to choose your products properly.
Vizü aims to lessen the environmental impact on our planet, and we do so by striving to be a fully plant-based brand. Vizü has always been inspired by our ancestors and indigenous groups who only take what they need from their natural surroundings. They respect the Earth and have always been sustaining their natural resources for future generations. Their environmentally-conscious ways enable them to make use of fauna and flora for food and architecture, without depleting precious resources.
As an ecologically-responsible brand, we minimise the use of non-biodegradable *packaging products and employ recyclable materials as much as we can.
* shrink film for securing bottle cap and PET plug/pump component.
