ool. FILIAL PLAY is an intervention to enhance the parent's nurturing skills and empowering them with new and innovative ways to interact with their children. In Filial Play Coaching, we involves the parents as an agent of change to improve their children’s emotional state and behaviour through the use of non-directive play. It is suitable for children aged between 18 months and 16 years with mild emotional or behavioural problems.

As an alumni of The School of Positive Psychology, attended Wellbeing 2.0 Full Day Conference. The programme was well lineup covering all aspects of wellbeing, it was so engaging and enriching that I enjoyed being fully present. It was inspiring and insightful to hear from the speakers who are expertise in their own field. Happy to see familiar faces in person, though we were constantly updated via social media and meeting like minded people 😁

"In TODAY’s conversations with youths trained in providing peer support, a common theme that surfaced is the understated impact one can have simply by “being there” — present and free of judgement."

The play therapy trainees supervised by me were often awed by the results of non-directive play. By being there, you are providing the time and space for a child who needs that to work out their issue. Being non-judgmental, you allow the child to feel accepted to be who he/she is without the need to please the adults around them or trying hard to adapt and adjust to the environment, which could be causing the current behavior issue. In the playroom, it is not the toys that are important but the therapist.

SINGAPORE — Shortly after 23-year-old David experienced his first bouts of panic attacks in 2019, he knew instinctively that he needed to get help. It took him almost a whole year of grappling with suicidal thoughts, however, before he finally told a close friend what he was going through.

Rather than focusing attention on the treatment of mental disorders, at least equal emphasis should be placed on preventive care."

The national mental health and well-being strategy is “holistic” and aims to address mental well-being through health, social and education settings.

"Abuse may cause children to experience low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and fear, they may have difficulties in relationships with others later in life. Children who witness abuse may also be distressed. Apart from common emotions such as fear, helplessness and confusion, they may also develop a sense of insecurity, not knowing when they may become victims themselves."

In the playroom, when children feel emotionally safe and ready, they will play out their feelings (anger, shame, fear, anxiety etc) from the traumatic (abused)/negative (witnessed) experiences. They may try to gain sense of control by playing out different scenarios such as superheroes rescuing the animals from the hunter or magic that makes the person/situation disappear etc. From there, they will explore with various coping strategies and find one that suits them most. They will also work on their confidence and self-esteem issues that might be affected by the traumatic/negative experience. When we say children are playing, they are actually working hard 😊

Our Story

Adelyn Lee is an accredited Play Therapist, Filial Play Coach and Creative Arts/Play Supervisor with Play Therapy International (PTI). She has a wide variety of working experiences with children in preschools and SPED schools. Adelyn works with both typical and atypical children on a wide range of difficulties which includes: behavioral, tantrums, withdrawal, lack of intrinsic motivation, self-confidence, self-esteem, peer relationship, short attention span, inability to focus, ASD, ADHD, GDD and delayed speech issues.

Adelyn loves working with children, finding joy in their spontaneity and resilience. She is always honored to be the “co-helper”, walking hand-in-hand with the child in their journey to wellness. She believes in upholding the therapeutic play environment safe as the child works through his/her issues in the therapy room. Adelyn believes that such therapeutic play can be equally extended not to children but also to parents. As such she has been a pioneer to launch a series of creative play workshops aimed at enhancing parent-child bonding this year in community places in Singapore. Participants’ feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, requesting for more such moments. Adelyn thus strongly believes in the power of play not just in the lives of children but also in adults too.
