Characterised by swelling, bruising, tenderness, and a visible knee deformity, knee fractures refer to any break in the femur, tibia or kneecap.

Treatment for mild to moderate cases of knee fractures involves the use of assistive devices, physiotherapy to improve mobility, range of motion and strengthen leg muscles, as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and swelling.

For those with a displaced fracture or unstable knee joint, surgery may be done where bone fragments will first be repositioned into their proper alignments and held together with special screws and metal plates to ensure proper healing.

Tearing of the rotator cuff, whether partial or complete, can stem from a combination of age-related degeneration and repetitive overhead activity.

A torn rotator cuff causes pain, weakness and limited shoulder function, making it difficult for one to perform everyday tasks, such as reaching overhead and lifting objects.

While conservative treatments like physiotherapy and medications can help relieve pain and improve shoulder function, surgical repair of the rotator cuff restores shoulder function and flexibility by reattaching the torn tendon to the bone using sutures or anchors.

Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe, usually a manifestation of a change in the alignment and structure of the foot.

While bunions may be hereditary, wearing tight footwear, being obese, or underlying medical conditions can also make one more susceptible to developing a bunion.

Once formed, bunions will not resolve on their own and tend to worsen over time, which can make walking difficult and eventually cause deformities of the 2nd and 3rd toes.

Surgery remains the most definitive way of correcting bunions, where the bone, ligaments and tendons are realigned to move the big toe back to its rightful position.

As one of the main ligaments in the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is responsible for the movement and rotational stability of the knee joint.

Any direct impact to the knee or pivoting injury sustained during sports can cause damage to the ACL, resulting in injuries of varying severity, including minor sprains, partial or complete tears.

For cases of partial ACL tear and minimal instability, physiotherapy and rehabilitation can help strengthen the calf muscles, hamstrings and quadriceps, leading to increased mobility, proprioception and stability of the knee.

For more serious cases of partially or completely torn ACL, surgical reconstruction via minimally invasive arthroscopic approach is recommended. This involves replacing the torn ACL with a tendon graft to help alleviate symptoms and restore joint stability.

Stabbing pain in the heel upon waking up in the morning or after prolonged sitting is characteristic of ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜€, one of the most common causes of heel pain.

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia โ€“ the thick band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes.

Inflammation of the plantar fascia is typically a result of overexertion of the tissue, causing microtears that result in degeneration and inflammation.

Most cases of plantar fasciitis can be treated with non-surgical options like physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications to relieve symptoms. In severe cases, steroid injections, extracorporeal shock wave therapy or minimally invasive surgery may be required.

When bones of the knee pop out of place, either completely or partially, it is known as a ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป.

A dislocated knee is usually caused by an impact injury (eg hard falls, accidents) or through sports, which can result in knee pain, stiffness and difficulty bearing weight. One may also notice that the kneecap slips off to the side and experience creaking sound when moving the joint.

Treatment for knee dislocation, especially in cases where the knee joint is unstable, requires surgery. This involves repositioning the bone fragments into their normal alignment and using special screws and metal plates to hold the fragments together for proper healing.

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‡๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ refers to the stiffness and reduced range of motion in the shoulder due to the inflammation and thickening of the shoulder capsule.

This shoulder condition typically progresses in three stages, with pain, stiffness and limited movement experienced in the shoulder joint.

To manage frozen shoulder effectively, treatment will first involve conservative means like medications, physiotherapy and corticosteroid injections to help reduce pain and improve shoulder motion.

However, should symptoms persist or when conservative treatments fail to suffice, surgery in the form of shoulder arthroscopy can be recommended to help stretch and release the stiffened joint capsule.

If you experience sudden pain after an accidental twisting of your ankle; chances are, you mightโ€™ve sustained an ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป.

Ankle sprains occur when ligaments supporting the ankle are overstretched, causing them to tear.

Any high-impact sports, wearing of improper footwear, a fall or while walking on uneven surfaces are often the cause of an ankle sprain.

In most instances, the pain and swelling can be relieved with conservative treatment, including RICE therapy, recovery aids and physiotherapy.

For cases of chronic ankle pain and instability from previous ligamentous injuries of the ankle, arthroscopic surgery may be used to reconstruct torn ligaments.

Also known as Jumperโ€™s knee, this is a common cause of knee pain that arises from the inflammation of the patellar tendon.

Inflammation of the patellar tendon can stem from overuse of the knee joint (e.g. from physical activities that involve running and frequent jumping on hard surfaces) or abnormal alignment of lower limbs (e.g. flat feet).

With the patellar tendon inflamed, pain and tenderness can be felt just below the kneecap, along with a popping sensation and swelling when kneeling.

With early surgical repair, knee tendon inflammation can be effectively treated to prevent the patellar tendon from scarring and tightening into a shortened position.

Arthritis in the ankle refers to the wearing down or damage of cartilage in the ankle joint, causing pain, swelling and walking difficulties.

While ankle arthritis cannot be cured, it can still be effectively managed through targeted treatment.

Early-stage ankle arthritis can benefit from conservative means like medications, physiotherapy, assistive devices and lifestyle modifications to relieve pain and limit disability.

Severe cases of ankle arthritis, especially if the pain interferes with daily life or does not respond to conservative treatments, surgery may be recommended to alleviate pain, restore ankle stability and motion.

๐——๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—–๐—ต๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด is a foot and ankle surgeon with vast experience in treating all forms of ankle arthritis. Consult with Dr Seng for proper assessment and treatment if you suspect yourself of having ankle arthritis.

Serving as a shock absorber, the knee cartilage protects bones from damage and facilitates smooth joint movement.

However, this makes it susceptible to damage, which can arise from wear and tear or forceful twisting of the knee during contact sports.

With a torn knee cartilage, pain, stiffness and limited mobility can occur, interfering with daily activities.

Depending on severity, treatment of knee cartilage tears may involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy and supporting devices to help relieve symptoms and prevent disease progression.

That said, for more serious cases, knee cartilage repair may be necessary. This involves suturing the torn pieces together or replacing the torn cartilage with a healthy transplant to restore cartilage function and improve joint mobility.

๐——๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—–๐—ต๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด is an orthopaedic surgeon proficient in knee cartilage repair. If you have been experiencing symptoms indicative of a torn knee cartilage, seek treatment advice from Dr Seng today.
