Did you know?

According to infectious diseases expert Dr. Leong Hoe Nam, “On the Richter scale of pain, shingles can be higher than giving birth [1].”

Yet with shingles, the pain [2] only tells half the story.

“Because shingles never comes alone. Two accompanying potential problems for shingles that are really well-documented; stroke and heart attack [3],” says Dr. Leong.

In rare cases, shingles can increase the risk of a heart attack by 59% and stroke by 35% [3*].

Learn all about this and more from Dr. Leong as he talks about shingles risk, pain and how “at the end of the day prevention outweighs treatment.”

When her dad, Christopher, got shingles, Claire was worried. It was his second time [1] and he was already in his 60s. She could sense that he was frustrated, his energy level was low and he said “the pain was more intense - like needles poking into the skin^”.

But with shingles, the pain [2] only tells half the story. As Claire found out recently, shingles can also increase the risk of a heart attack by 59% and stroke by 35% [3*].

If your loved ones are 50 or older, speak to your doctor about how you can prevent them from getting shingles [1].

Lionel contracted shingles when he was in his mid-50s. The pain according to him, was like nothing he had ever felt before - “like somebody was turning a screw into me, going all the way to the bones^”.

Yet with shingles, the pain [1] only tells half the story. As Lionel recently discovered, shingles can actually increase the risk of a heart attack by 59% and stroke by 35% [2*].

If you’re 50 or older [3], and/or have a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) [4], speak to your doctor about shingles prevention.

Recent news of Nick Shen battling shingles reminds us that this painful condition can affect anyone, regardless of age. In the article, Nick shared, “The pain is beyond description. It compelled me to pause my work, cancel events…”

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the same virus that gives us chickenpox. The pain from shingles can be disabling - often described as burning or stabbing. The risk of shingles is higher for those above 50 years of age. But here's the good news: awareness and prevention can make a world of difference.

Seek advice from your doctor if you think you are at risk. You can also learn more about protection against shingles here: https://www.stopshingles.com/how-can-you-protect-yourself-against-shingles.
