Could your “normal” vitamin levels be quietly shortening your health-span?

A new publication from the NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity shows that even mild gaps in vitamins B6, B9, B12, D and K can drain energy, blur cognition, weaken immunity, and erode bone strength, long before any clinical deficiency is flagged. Standard Dietary Reference Intakes are based on the “average” person and often ignore genetics, lifestyle, and nutrient interactions. That means many of us fall below truly optimal levels.

The study suggests that biomarker-guided, precision supplementation could help redefine what “enough” really means—supporting longer, healthier lives tailored to everyone.

This work, led by Muhammad Daniel Azlan Mahadzir, Sheryl Tan, Dr Elena Sandalova, Dr Ee Moon Chin, and Prof Andrea B. Maier, lays the foundation for setting evidence-based thresholds that personalise nutrition.

Our new research reveals that high conscientiousness in middle-aged and older adults, typically linked to better health, may also increase the likelihood and severity of suicidal behavior, particularly among those struggling with depression.

Interestingly, this association diminishes in those with severe physical illness, suggesting that conscientiousness might influence su***de risk differently based on health status. Read full paper here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.comppsych.2024.152523

Our latest research revealed that protein supplementation boosts muscle mass in community-dwelling older adults. Surprisingly, the effect is consistent regardless of the dose, frequency, or timing of the supplementation.

Key takeaways:
- Protein supplementation boosts muscle mass, especially in those living independently.
- The effectiveness of protein supplementation in boosting muscle mass is not significantly influenced by the dose (≥30g vs.

In our latest research, we delve into the cutting-edge role of lipids in ageing and how lipidomics might be the key to unlocking healthier, longer lives. Our review explores how lipid profiles could serve as biomarkers of healthy ageing and even lead to the development of a "lipid clock" to predict future health outcomes.

This breakthrough could revolutionize precision medicine and boost healthy longevity.
