A new study by IMH and NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine identified blood-based protein markers that may help predict which youths at risk of psychosis are likely to actually develop psychosis, and developed prediction models achieving accuracy levels of up to 96%, taking us one step closer to earlier, more targeted intervention.

Among youths who are at ultra-high risk of psychosis, about 20% develop psychosis within two years. Finding them earlier means intervening sooner, which can translate to better outcomes.

โ€œPsychosis is a debilitating condition, but early intervention can shape the disease progression trajectory to produce good recovery outcomes. Diagnosing psychosis is, however, inherently challenging because symptoms might take time to fully manifest. These biomarkers could potentially complement clinical assessments in identifying those at risk of developing psychosis,โ€ said A/Prof Jimmy Lee, Group Chief Research and Innovation Officer, NHG Health; Senior Consultant and Clinician-Scientist, IMH; Associate Professor (Clinical Practice), LKCMedicine.

IMHโ€™s past two editions of the landmark Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS) showed an increase in the lifetime prevalence of mental illness in Singapore: from 12% in 2010 to 13.9% in 2016. As Singapore emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, will this trend continue, or will growing mental health awareness and support systems make a difference?

Launching in May 2026, the third edition of SMHS will be IMHโ€™s most comprehensive nationwide mental health survey to date. Newly included in the study will be residents aged 15 and above (from the previous 18 years) to capture the mental health experiences of younger teens during critical developmental periods.

The epidemiological study is also Singaporeโ€™s first and only nationwide mental health survey using internationally validated measures. First conducted in 2010 and 2016, it has shaped national mental health policies by establishing key information on the prevalence of common mental disorders, associated risk factors, treatment gaps and help-seeking patterns among Singapore residents.

SMHS 2026 also looks beyond illness to examine the populationโ€™s mental wellness.

โ€œIt looks at the entire mental health continuum โ€“ from good to poor mental health, and from the absence to presence of mental illness. Mental health is shaped by many factors, and it exists along a spectrum. If we only focus on illness, weโ€™re reacting too late. By looking at positive mental health and protective factors, we can go further upstream, strengthen what keeps people well, and put in place programmes to address issues early. We hope that will help us build a healthier, more resilient population.โ€ says Associate Professor Mythily Subramaniam, Assistant Chairman, Medical Board (Research), IMH, and Principal Investigator of the study.

Are we becoming too reliant on AI? And what does that mean for our children? A/Prof Swapna Verma, Chairman of Medical Board at IMH, joined A/Prof Jennifer Ang from SUSS on CNA's Deep Dive podcast to unpack the growing role of AI companions in our lives.

A/Prof Swapna shared that while AI companions offer round-the-clock accessibility, they are designed to affirm rather than challenge, which can pose real risks for vulnerable users.

Her advice to parents? If you notice your child withdrawing from real-world friendships in favour of AI, it's time to have a conversation with them, because human connection should always remain a priority.

Anxiety shows up differently for everyone, but managing it often starts with small, consistent habits.

โœ๏ธ Try journalling. Writing anxious thoughts down makes them feel less consuming and easier to work through.

๐Ÿ’ผ In professional settings, reduce daily pressure by breaking tasks down, protecting your working hours, and voicing your needs to a manager.

We're proud to announce that our IMH clinicians have been appointed to NHG Health's Mental Health Academic Clinical Programme (MH ACP) โ€“ Singapore's first mental health ACP!

This milestone establishes NHG Health-LKCMedicine as the national leader in academic mental healthcare, with IMH leading the initiative alongside our sister NHG institutions. The MH ACP will be building a learning health ecosystem where research informs education which in turn enriches practice.

Together, we're advancing the future of mental healthcare in Singapore. Congratulations to all our newly appointed clinicians!

Some days, home can feel loud, busy, and overwhelming, especially for our kids. And when that happens, big emotions can be harder to manage.

Occupational therapist Jasper Tan shares how a simple calm-down corner can give your child a safe space to pause, breathe, and reset.

A few simple ideas to get started:
โ€ข A cosy spot (cushions, beanbag, soft lighting)
โ€ข Comfort items (favourite toy, blanket)
โ€ข Calming tools (books, sensory toys, music)
โ€ข Keep it consistent and easy to access

It doesnโ€™t have to be perfect - just a space your child knows they can return to when things feel like too much. ๐Ÿ’›
