A Mother's Strength: Overcoming Postpartum Psychosis | Rainie Ang
After two years of trying to conceive, Rainie Ang welcomed her baby boy in September 2024. But just six days later, she experienced something she had never heard of — postpartum psychosis.
Severe confusion, delusions, and hallucinations led to three weeks of hospitalisation away from her newborn. With treatment, she made a full recovery and now cherishes every moment with her son. 💙
Postpartum psychosis affects 1–2 mothers per 1,000 births. Recovery is possible with timely treatment.
Rainie opens up about her journey — from the symptoms she experienced to her path of recovery, and the insights she’s gained about life along the way. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of maternal mental health and the need to support mothers through every stage of motherhood. 🤍

In forensic psychiatry, fitness to plead is about whether a person is mentally capable of understanding what’s happening in court: from the charges they face, to giving instructions to their lawyer, or even following the proceedings. 🧠 At its heart, it’s about fairness and giving everyone a chance to be heard.

Bringing a touch of magic to occupational therapy: Meet Chan Kuang Hong
🎩✨ For Kuang Hong, magic started as a hobby — a way to bring joy to others. That passion since childhood became something more — a way to bring joy, confidence, and connection into patient care. Watch the full video: https://youtu.be/i2-G8EqYGKo

What a week it’s been at IMH!
Staff Week was filled with laughter, learning, and heartwarming moments that reminded us why we love what we do. From creative workshops and wellness activities to heartfelt award ceremonies, every moment was a celebration of our amazing people. We cheered, connected, and reflected on what truly brings us together — our passion for mental health and the bonds that make IMH feel like family. Every smile shone with the spirit of Thriving as One in Love and the joy of growing stronger together.
Here’s to growing, thriving, and continuing to support one another with heart. 💙

The Occupational Therapist With A Magic Touch #IMHCares
For occupational therapist Chan Kuang Hong, magic has been a lifelong passion. From performing on stage as a teenager to competing in magic contests, he loved the wonder and joy it brought to others. But over time, the spark began to fade — audiences were harder to impress, and he started questioning the value of his craft.
Everything changed when he volunteered at a nursing home. While performing alongside a resident, he saw something special — the resident’s eyes lit up, their hands moved with purpose, and laughter filled the room. It was then that Kuang Hong realised magic could be more than entertainment — it could be a tool for healing and connection.
Today, he brings that same magic into his work at IMH. Beyond conducting functional assessments, Kuang Hong designs creative sessions where patients learn simple magic tricks using everyday objects. These sessions help them build confidence, fine motor skills, social interaction, and most importantly, a sense of joy and possibility.
🪄 Kuang Hong’s passion reminds us that care can take many forms — sometimes, it’s found in the most unexpected places.

Celebrating our Peer Support Specialists (PSS)! 🌟
At IMH, our PSS team uses their own lived experiences of recovery to support others through theirs. They provide one-on-one sessions, run peer groups and workshops, and work alongside clinicians to make mental healthcare more holistic, compassionate, and hopeful.
Since 2009, the PSS movement at IMH has grown — with training, co-created programmes, and even our very own PSS Day 🎉. Today, we’re proud to have 11 PSS working across departments, proving that recovery is possible and powerful.
💡 Fun fact: PSS are trained professionals who intentionally share their experiences and inspire hope. Relapses don’t mean failure — they show resilience and model recovery in real life.
Here’s to our PSS for bringing hope, wisdom, and empathy into every conversation. 💪💙 Happy Global Peer Support Celebration Day!

Grooming and showering can be tough if your loved one with dementia resists, gets upset, or even lashes out. It isn’t stubbornness. Often, they may feel cold, embarrassed, or frightened by the running water. 🚿💇 Small steps like warming the room, explaining each action, or keeping routines familiar can help them feel safe.
In this video, senior occupational therapist Ong Xin Ling shares more!

In therapy, your clinician isn’t just listening — they’re also noticing their own emotional responses to you. 💭 This is called countertransference. Far from being a distraction, it’s a valuable tool that helps clinicians better understand your experiences and guide the therapeutic process.

Caregiver Tips - Food and Medication
Sometimes when a loved one with dementia refuses food or spits out their pills, it’s not “bad behaviour” — they might just find the food too hot, the taste unfamiliar, or not understand why they need the medicine. 💊🍲 With a little patience and reassurance, mealtimes can feel a lot less stressful.
Senior occupational therapist Ong Xin Ling shares simple, practical tips for caregiving in this video series. Learn how the T.A.N.G.O. approach developed by IMH's Department of Geriatric Psychiatry team can make communication smoother.

🌱✨ Say hello to our newly reopened Sunrise Garden, now thriving with pandan, sweet potato, spearmint, curry plants and more! Thanks to the generous support of EDIBLE GARDEN CITY and a kind donation from Ms Yen Tan, our patients and staff can enjoy a therapeutic space for gardening and harvesting herbs and veggies.
Principal occupational therapist Joycelyn Neo has seen firsthand how the garden makes a difference to patients. "In one cooking group, a pair of young patients harvested herbs for pasta carbonara. They had been feeling low in mood and unmotivated in school. But the act of creating something with ingredients they harvested themselves was a moment that grew into joy and even inspired them to chase culinary dreams," she shared. 👩🍳🌿
Ms Yen Tan said, “Mental health needs the collective support of our community. I’m heartened to see our community partners come together to help, and it’s such a privilege to be part of this journey.”
For Patricia Au, Vice President of Commercial Excellence & Organisational Services at Edible Garden City, the impact is clear: “Tending to plants and enjoying fresh produce from the garden boosts mental, physical and emotional well-being — that’s why we’re passionate about this project. It’s been a privilege to work with IMH and Ms Yen Tan.
