MYTH: Social Skills Cannot Be Taught to Children with Autism 🤔

This is FALSE! While children with autism might require more structured and explicit teaching methods, they can certainly learn social skills. Tailored interventions and strategies can be highly effective in helping them navigate social interactions.

Effective social skills training for children with autism involves more than mimicking neurotypical behavior. It should focus on understanding social cues, communicating effectively, and building skills that are relevant to their own social goals.

[APM Education Project] Zayden's Journey: Denied Request Program (3/6)

A challenge Zayden's parents face is him tantruming and exhibiting challenging behaviors when he does not get what he wants (having his request denied). To help Zayden to tolerate denied requests is by showing him that choosing to listen despite being disappointed or upset has its payoffs. In this video, we teach Zayden to manage having his request denied.

Zayden’s parents have also shared their thoughts on the APM and how it has helped their relationship with Zayden.
“Previously he didn’t really communicate with us so for him to actually direct us to ‘go there’, even though it’s just two simple words ‘go there’, it means a lot to us. Now we know he actually has a say in things like he knows that he wants to go somewhere” — Zayden’s Dad

We hope that Zayden's APM Education Project series has provided valuable insights into our Autism Partnership Method (APM) and its unique implementation of ABA. Subscribe and keep an eye out for our next season of the APM Education Project!

[APM Education Project] Zayden's Journey: Waiting Program Part 3

One of the main challenges Zayden's parents faced is his tendency to rush towards what he desires. They also highlighted his impulsiveness and reluctance to wait.

Learning to wait is crucial for Zayden. This not only enhances safety but also prevents him from impulsively darting away from his parents and caregivers. The first program for Zayden is a Waiting Program designed for him to learn to wait for increasing durations, for various things. We work on developing Zayden's ability to wait.

The next program we have planned for Zayden IS Tagging & "Go There" Program! Stay tuned!

Many parents of children with autism find difficulties in having their children walk with them in the community safely, and the tendency of children on the spectrum to wander off impulsively is a huge safety issue for parents.

Philus' parents have been struggling to get him to walk beside them nicely on the street. Philus gets easily distracted and attracted by many things and would run off or keep stopping and dropping to the floor. He would also continuously touch things and repeatedly ask questions about things he sees. A 5-minute walk often takes 30-minutes to walk with Philus. In this APM Education Project video and watch our HK team train Philus in 3 days to walk nicely with his parents in the community!
