"I am different, not less." Temple Grandin

Let us understand autism from the perspective and experience from Dr. Temple Grandin, a person diagnosed with autism. She is an American scientist and animal behaviorist. She is a prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and the author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.

Temple Grandin movie
A movie was made in 2010 based on the true life story of Temple Grandin, the first person in the world to share her experience of autism, her struggles, her fascination and natural instinct about animal behaviors. Autism used to be described as childhood schizophrenia back then.
Watch the movie here : https://www.hbo.com/movies/temple-grandin

Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers...

Have you wonder why our kids fidget and unable to stay focused?

We all, even adults, face the same issues too. However, we manage to 'get away' or learn to cope with it. We make ourselves a coffee, listen to some music, or simple take a walk around our office.

For our kids, they may not be able to communicate their needs for sensory break, they simply show it in their behaviour in order to self-regulate. They would fidget with their pencils, rock the chair back and forth, ask for frequent toilet breaks etc.
The environment could be too much for them - they are sensory overload and they are desperate for a break. Or they are in sedentary activities for too long. Imagine if you are in that situation, what would you do?

So we need to pace our children activities and give them short sensory break in between learning activities, to allow the mind and body to reset, to gain or offload sensory input, and in the end, they are able to stay alert, on task and focused.
