Weekend musings:

All too often, we crave for something different, something that would add spice to our mundane lives. However, we tend to quickly reject differences, especially those observed among people.

In working with children with developmental disabilities, difference in one's behaviour is seen as a skill deficit. Likely because one's behaviours may have had social consequences (e.g., hard to make friends or find a job). Treatment then quickly focuses on helping the individual integrate into the dominant culture that dictates what we say, how we say things, how we act, etc.

A lot is focused on addressing the difference. Is there room for us to embrace the differences in our human condition? What if the tables were turned and we were the minority?

We could learn to communicate better by giving time to understand the other person. Some of us may prefer the norm, but let's not be an adversary. Respect individuality and allow differences; we may learn just how similar we are.

Has your child been referred for a psychological evaluation? Feeling confused about what that it is and what it involves?

We are here to address questions that are frequently asked by parents and caregivers.

Similar to medical check-ups whereby doctors conduct tests to determine causes and diagnoses, psychologists provide comprehensive evaluations to better understand and support a child’s functioning.
