Our Senior Consultant, Dr Ivy Lim (in light blue) shares some Physical Activity tips on keeping healthy.
Happy International Women's Day! 💐
Today is International Women’s Day! EIMS Public Outreach director Dr Ivy Lim (pictured first from left) shares some tips for keeping in good health.
1. How do you fit Physical Activity into your busy schedule?
I take the stairs between levels, or approach an escalator particularly when the lift is crowded. Brisk walking also helps when rushing between meetings. A reminder to self: Build in toilet or water breaks throughout the day to break up sedentary time or prolonged sitting.
When not driving, I take public transport as it is often cheaper and can avoid jams. When driving, I look for the cheapest parking available in the vicinity and walk to my destination.
2. Can you share with us on the importance of Physical Activity particularly for Women's health?
Physical activity is important for both males and females. For females in particular, there is strong evidence that physical activity lowers risk of breast cancer, and moderate evidence that PA lowers risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of womb lining) and increases bone density.
3. What are some key Physical Activity recommendations for women?
Personally, I recommend to try and build in “exercise snacks” throughout the day, and incorporate physical activity into your daily lifestyle whenever you can. Start low and go slow, and build up your momentum from there. Most importantly, do what works for you. Whether it be signing up for classes, or exercise dates with friends and family, find your motivation through doing what you enjoy.
