☀️Sun Salutation Sundays☀️
☀️Today we look at Urdhva Mukha Svanasana aka Upward Facing Dog☀️
How is this different from Cobra and what are its benefits?
✳️ In upward facing dog, thighs and hips do not rest on the floor. In Cobra or baby Cobra the thighs and hips are resting on the floor. This is a less deep backbend asana as compared to Cobra.
✅ Keep the shoulders away from the ears and rolled backwards to open your chest
✅Bring the chest forward through the arms
✅ When incorporated into your sun salutations as a warm up for Ashtanga practice, it warms up the body for backbends such as Setu Bandhasana (Bridge) and Urdhva Dharunasana (Wheel)
✅ Strengthens arms and shoulders
✅Stretches back and front of body
✅Prepares body for other back bend asanas ( when incorporated into a warm up routine)

☀️☀️ Sun Salutation Sundays☀️
“I love this pose!” said every beginner yogi never 😉
Why do we even do it during an Ashtanga practice?
👉🏾 builds upper body strength for the jump through and jump backs
👉🏾 builds strength for
👉🏾helps with core strength for inversions like headstand
👉🏾helps with balancing postures as it increases core (not only and but back muscles as well)
👉🏾 pretty obvious but this is also part of warming up the body as we move in the vinyasa to keep the body warm
Give it a try and even if you are doing variations with knees on the mat, you’re still getting stronger each day!

☀️Sun Salutation Sundays☀️
Today we look at standing forward bend / forward fold. In Sanskrit it’s called Uttanasana.
What is the purpose of this asana aside from being able to fit in a luggage for free flights?
✅ improved posture
✅relieve back stiffness and neck tension. Lengthening lower back and the entire spine as the torso hangs forward helps to counteract pressure in the lower back from sitting or living a sedentary lifestyle.
✅release tension in the shoulders and neck
✅stretches hamstrings
✅ improve hip flexibility

☀️Sun Salutation Sundays☀️
Today we look at Urdhva Hastasana
☀️
A rejuvenating and energizing asana that brings a range of physical and mental benefits.
We stand tall, core strong as in mountain pose (tadasana), with the hands raised over the head.
The name for this asana comes from the Sanskrit urdhva, meaning "upward," hasta, meaning "hands," and asana, meaning "posture." Urdhva hastasana is called upward salute or upward hands pose.
Benefits
✅ stretches the sides of the body, spine, shoulders, armpits, and belly.
✅tones the thighs, improves digestion, ✅helps to relieve anxiety and fatigue.
✅create space in the chest and lungs, which is therapeutic for asthma and congestion.

☀️Every Sunday for Sun Salutation Sundays ☀️we will look at an asana from the Ashtanga sun salutations (surya namaskar) and explore each pose’s benefits and purpose.
☀️Today’s posture is Samasthiti some may know it as Tadasana or Mountain Pose.

Looks deceptively simple, Samasthiti has complex benefits when done correctly. It is an active position and can help correct muscle imbalances, improve posture, and deepen awareness...
May help to:
✅improve posture and coordination.
✅relieve sciatic pain.
✅improve agility.
✅boost circulation.
✅tone core muscles.
✅strengthen your back, hips, and legs.

to when I was teaching in Community Centres. Had to stop because the CC I was teaching at was undergoing a 3 year renovation so I lost my venue. Being a yoga teacher is not easy that’s for sure, although you get to do what you love you really also have to seize opportunities when they come because if you wait it’s gone.
At the end of the day, it’s the students that really inspire me when I see them progress be it physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. And that is really fulfilling.
📝Note to my students: Remember yoga is not only a physical asana based exercise although you cannot discount the benefits of that as well. It’s how the practice makes you feel holistically.Love you guys and gals and don’t forget to self love too!😍
Special shout out to my student and friend who took this photo 💓💓💓

🤔 Confusing progress pic? How does 2022 seem “worse” than 2020?🤔
Read below to find out….
To the untrained eye, 2020 looks better but here are some alignment points to note:
✅ left hip in 2020 is not squared and slightly flaring out to the side. Giving the impression that the leg is higher. We should be reaching back and up, not back and sideways. Hips should be squared I.e. both facing the same direction evenly.
✅ greater shoulder flexibility in 2022. As you can see I’m reaching back more, my hands are close towards my middle back. Elbows should be facing the front and not flaring out towards the sides.
✅ Balance. In 2022 there is no wall helping me to stretch my tight shoulders and upper back and helping me to balance, when you have wider range of motion in shoulders, upper back, chest, hips etc. and attempting full dancer pose, you won’t find tremendously tight springs pulling your torso forward and down and your leg pulling you back and down.. it’s easier to keep your balance.
✅most importantly do a full warm up for your shoulders, spines and hips before attempting any yoga postures, not only this one. Unless of course the yoga postures you’re doing are warm up postures, then by all means go for the warm up postures without the pre-warm up postures to your warm up postures 😂
Happy Sunday all! Remember if you do everything perfectly it wouldn’t be called a practice. 😉
