Students from SIT are conducting online interviews with parents of children aged 6–16 who have been diagnosed with SSD. The study aims to better understand how communication difficulties may impact children’s peer relationships and self-esteem, and to provide insights that can guide more targeted support and intervention.

Speech Sound Disorders (SSD) is a condition where children have difficulty speaking clearly, making it hard for others to understand them. This can lead to problems in forming and maintain friendships. It can also lead to lower self-confidence. This study aims to understand the challenges faced by parents of children with SSD in Singapore, specifically focusing on how these disorders affect their children's social relationships and self-esteem. The study will involve interviews with parents of children and teenagers aged 6-15 diagnosed with SSD. A minimum of 20 participants will be recruited from various paediatric speech and language therapy service providers in Singapore. Through online, one-on-one interviews, parents will be asked about their child’s social interactions and emotional well-being, particularly how they perceive their child’s ability to form friendships and their self-esteem in relation to their communication difficulties. The study hypothesizes that many parents will perceive their child as struggling to maintain peer relationships and experiencing low self-esteem. The findings will help in developing targeted interventions that improve both the communication skills and social well-being of children with SSD. Additionally, the study will provide valuable information to healthcare providers and policymakers to enhance support services for children and families dealing with communication disorders.

If you know of any parents who might be keen to participate in this research, please reach out to Vicki at 2201960@sit.singaporetech.edu.sg.
