BMCS successfully organized a professional seminar on 4th October 2024, at HortPark, Singapore, under the theme "Charting the Future Shipping: Innovation, Sustainability, and Decarbonization." The seminar brought together distinguished speakers and maritime professionals to address critical topics shaping the future of the shipping industry.

The seminar was held as part of the BMCS 10th Anniversary & Global Bangladeshi Mariners Reunion 2024, which took place from October 4-6, 2024, in Singapore.Here are the key highlights of the seminar:

*𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙖𝙣𝙪𝙡 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧 (Ex-Surveyor & Examiner, Maritime & Coastguard Agency, UK) discussed "The Future of Maritime Education & Training" and how we can prepare for upcoming challenges in the industry.

*𝘿𝙧. 𝙆𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝘼𝙡𝙖𝙢 (Senior Vice President, Maritec, CTI Group) presented insights on "Shipping Net Zero '50 Strategy," focusing on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

*𝙈𝙧. 𝙈𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙩 (Director, Future Shipping Team, South East Asia & Pacific) elaborated on "Alternate Fuels" as key solutions for decarbonizing the shipping industry.

*𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙕𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙧𝙪𝙡 𝘽𝙝𝙪𝙞𝙮𝙖𝙣 (Associate Professor, Maritime Simulation and Autonomy Director, Warsash MASS Research) spoke on "From Research to Reality: How MASS is Driving the Autonomous Revolution in Maritime Shipping," highlighting the role of autonomous vessels in the future of maritime operations.

The seminar took place from 3 PM to 6 PM at the MPH Room, HortPark, Singapore. It provided valuable insights into the industry's future and facilitated discussions on sustainability and innovation in maritime operations.

BMCS wrapped up a memorable 3-day celebration from 4th to 6th October 2024 in Singapore!

From a Professional Seminar and Sports Fiesta to an unforgettable Gala Dinner, the event brought together BMCS members, their families, and esteemed guests from around the world, including Bangladesh, the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Myanmar, Canada, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and more!

This milestone event hosted representatives from various sectors of the maritime industry, including shipowners, management, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), classification societies, and more. We were honored to welcome Mr. Chen Kit Jam, Senior Deputy Director (Shipping) of MPA, who joined us as Guest of Honor in recognizing the incredible achievements of Bangladeshi mariners.

The weekend was filled with insightful discussions on the future of the maritime industry, safety protocols, and celebrations of BMCS’s remarkable achievements over the last decade!

*𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔:

*4𝒕𝒉 𝑶𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓 2024 :

The celebration kicked off with a Professional Seminar at HortPark, Singapore, from 3 PM to 6 PM. The seminar featured insightful discussions on key industry topics such as the Shipping Net Zero '50 Strategy, the role of alternate fuels, the future of maritime education and training, and how Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) are driving the autonomous revolution in maritime shipping.

The Inauguration Ceremony took place from 7 PM to 10:30 PM, bringing together mariners and their families for an evening filled with cultural performances, networking, and fun. Participants from both local and overseas performed musical acts, making it a delightful night of entertainment and great food.

•*5𝙩𝙝 𝙊𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧 2024 :

The second day was dedicated to outdoor fun at the Sports Fiesta, held at SIA Cricket Ground from 8 AM to 1 PM. The event featured exciting activities like the Pillow Passing Competition for ladies, Kids Run, Marble Race, Cricket Match between BMCS members and overseas guests, and a thrilling Tug of War. These activities fostered camaraderie and team spirit, bringing joy to all participants.

Later in the evening, the highly anticipated Gala Dinner took place at the Orchid Country Club from 7 PM to 11 PM. With over 200 Bangladeshi families and 524 distinguished guests in attendance, the gala was a night of celebration and recognition. Mr. Chen Kit Jam praised the significant contributions of Bangladeshi mariners to the global maritime industry. Discussions on maritime safety and the challenges faced by the shipping industry were also key highlights, along with a strong emphasis on recent tragedies in the Bangladesh shipping industry and the importance of safety and accountability.

The Gala Dinner was filled with cultural performances, celebrating the rich heritage of the Bangladeshi maritime community.
A special Crest of Honor was presented to legendary Bangladeshi mariners for their lifelong contributions:

Students who achieved outstanding results in 2023 PSLE were also honored with awards during the dinner. Sponsors were recognized for their contributions,. A video showcasing BMCS’s 10-year journey of success and growth was presented, capturing the attention of all attendees.

The event began with an inspiring opening speech by BMCS President Mar. Engr. Sanwer Dito, who warmly welcomed guests from Singapore and around the world, sharing the vision of BMCS. It concluded with closing remarks from BMCS General Secretary Mar. Engr. Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, who expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone for their gracious presence and participation. The event was beautifully hosted by Capt. Ghazi Abu Taher, adding charm and professionalism to the occasion.

•*6𝙩𝙝 𝙊𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧 2024 :

The final day featured a Breakfast & Networking Session at the SIA Restaurant at 8:30 AM, where professionals shared insights and fostered connections within the industry. The reunion concluded with a city tour around Singapore, showcasing its beautiful landmarks to visitors.

BMCS seamlessly organized the event under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Excellence”, commemorating its remarkable 10th anniversary (2014-2024). Attendees praised the arrangements and enjoyed reconnecting with alumni from the Bangladeshi maritime fraternity. It was truly a weekend to remember!

On 28 April 2024, BMCS and SBS jointly hosted a commemoration program in respect of the founder President of BMCS Late Mr Zafrul Alam. He was also a former President of SBS.

The programme held at Assyakirin Masjid was attended by the family members of Late Mr Zafrul Alam and people from all walks of life!

A Video was developed encompassing the glittering life of Mr. Alam. The speech he delivered during 2015 annual dinner of BMCS was once again displayed before the audience.

Panel of speakers included his family members, members of the society he lived with and his colleague. They enlightened the audience on the life journey of Mr Alam.

A commemoration ended with a dua mahfil.

The audience attended the program with highest degree of respect and silence. It touched the heart of all.

The organizers are grateful to everyone for their unconditional support.

On April 21, 2024, the Bangladeshi community in Singapore lost one of their guardians, Mr. Zafrul Alam, the iconic legendary Bangladeshi mariner, who breathed his last at his residence in Singapore.

Mr Zafrul Alam after a sea career of 8 years and having finally sailed as Chief Engineer of ocean-going vessels joined Singapore Marine Department in 1980. He Served 34 years in Singapore Maritime Administration including 4 years as Singapore’s representative to IMO and First Secretary (Maritime), Singapore High Commission, London. He was the Vice Chair for International Maritime Organisation, Marine Environment Protection Committee in 1999 and 2000.

He had a long-distinguished career of 42 years in the maritime field and contributed greatly to certification and policy matters. He was affectionately known by his international Iarine Colleagues as the “MARPOL Man”. He retired as Assistant Director Shipping Regulation & Development of Maritime & Port Authority in 2014.

He was the President of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Singapore in 1993 and 1994. He also served as President of Singapore Bangladesh Society in 2008 and 2009 and the Founding President of Bangladeshi Marine Community, Singapore in 2014-15.

He is a recipient of three National Day Awards. For his distinguished service and work of special significance he was awarded the Efficiency Medal in 1992. He is also the recipient of the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) 2002 and The Long Service Medal 2006

He was a man of integrity, sincerity, and compassion. He was a social thinker and a person with a great sense of fraternity who always stood beside those in distress. He was our mentor and a role model.

BMCS has lost not only a leader but a source of inspiration and courage. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of a fantastic role model. Our thoughts and prayers are with his bereaved family at this sorrowful time.

BMCS deeply mourn for the loss of such an outstanding Member and solicit your prayers for the salvation of his departed soul.
