They’re calling it "The Great Baby Bust of 2022" — attributing the younger generations' reluctance to have more than 1 child mostly to medical or financial concerns. But is there a way to put these fears to rest?

Many millennial and Gen Z mothers aren't planning to have any more children, says the new Motherly survey [read here: https://tinyurl.com/3syd6c3e]. And it's understandable considering the aftershocks of the pandemic, not to mention various medical, career, and even environmental considerations.

When a couple struggles to get pregnant, a doctor will investigate the problem with not just one but both parties. Both the female and male will undergo a series of tests to determine the underlying reasons for infertility and arrive at possible ways to address it.

A semen analysis is one of the many tests to determine male fertility issues. But what can be expected in this process? What are the normal values? What may affect the accuracy of results? A “baby dropping” around the third trimester—it’s really not as bad as it sounds.

When your doctor says, “Your baby is dropping,” it means the baby is moving even lower into your pelvis, getting ready for labour. It’s also called “lightening,” and it happens two to four weeks before delivery in first-time moms, sometimes earlier. In women who have already had children, the baby may not drop until labour begins.

Weight gain in pregnancy is very much dependent on one's health and body mass index (BMI) prior to the pregnancy. If you were underweight prior to becoming pregnant, it would then follow that there should be more weight gain as compared to a woman who was at a normal weight prior to the pregnancy. Likewise, if one was overweight or obese prior to being pregnant, there should be lesser weight gain during the course of the pregnancy.

It is best to gain weight slowly and steadily during pregnancy. Weight gain will differ on a trimester by trimester basis.

Your weight is just one of the many things that is monitored during a prenatal check-up. It is so important to ensure that you have a safe pregnancy. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with us as soon as possible.. If you have not scheduled one yet, you can request an appointment here >> https://tinyurl.com/2s394atp.

Folic acid is vital for a range of bodily functions in everyone and is especially important for pregnant women. A deficiency during pregnancy can lead to birth defects in the brain and spinal cord (e.g. anencephaly and spina bifida), also known as neural tube defects.

Some excellent food sources of folic acid include leafy green vegetables, beans, citrus fruits and fortified breakfast cereals. As you cannot get all your required daily intake through diet alone, supplementation is necessary.

A pregnant woman should consume at least 400 micrograms during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy as this is when most neural tube defects can occur. For those who are planning to have a baby, pre pregnancy folic acid supplementation is advised for at least one month prior to conception.

For more pregnancy dietary suggestions and prenatal supplementation, please do not hesitate to request for a non-obligatory consultation with Dr Pamela Tan.

Most women are under the impression that painful menstrual cramps are normal. They're not. 💔

Dysmenorrhea, or the slight pain and mild discomfort associated with menstruation, is often seen as ""just part of being a woman."" However, experiencing excessive pain during your period is a red flag signalling a problem that may impact your fertility.

This excruciating and disruptive pain is called SECONDARY DYSMENORRHEA, and is linked to conditions such as...

Trouble conceiving a child through natural means? IUI could be an answer.

For couples under 35, this means having unprotected s*x for up to one year. Meanwhile, couples over 35 may be a candidate for IUI if they've been having unprotected s*x for six months. Additionally, candidates for IUI should be in good overall health and not suffering from medical problems that adversely affect overall wellness.

You can read more on IUI here >> https://bit.ly/3gtlfb8, or you can book a non-obligatory consultation with Dr Pamela Tan for a thorough discussion. 👩‍⚕

IUI can be attempted as many times as the couple wishes. However, your chance for success decreases with increasing numbers of failed IUI attempts. It's also important for couples to keep in mind that a female fertility reduces with age, and that is a crucial factor to consider. 🤰

The current recommendation is to try 3-6 cycles of IUI in the absence of contraindications and proceed to in vitro fertilization (IVF) if unsuccessful.

To know more about IUI and other options you may have to address female infertility, check out our blog here >> https://bit.ly/33SkuFn to read all about it!
