๐Ÿง  SPA Neuro SIG Webinar
โœจ Unravelling Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) โœจ

Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) are among the most common causes of neurological disability, yet they remain widely misunderstood. This webinar unpacks the science, clinical reasoning, and physiotherapy-specific approaches to managing FND โ€” empowering clinicians to support patients more effectively.

๐Ÿ“… 23 February (Monday)
โฐ 6โ€“7 PM (Singapore) | 8โ€“9 PM (Queensland)
๐ŸŽฏ Target audience: Physiotherapists, therapy assistants & healthcare professionals with an interest in neurology

๐Ÿ” Learning objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
โ€ข Define FND and recognise key phenotypes (functional seizures, functional movement disorders, PPPD)
โ€ข Identify common diagnostic challenges and understand the role of positive signs (e.g. Hooverโ€™s sign)
โ€ข Apply the biopsychosocial model to FND assessment and management
โ€ข Describe evidence-informed physiotherapy approaches for FND care

๐ŸŽค Speaker:
Dr Dharsha Petrie โ€“ Advanced Physiotherapist & APA Titled Neurological Physiotherapist
One of Australiaโ€™s most experienced FND physiotherapists, Dharsha brings deep clinical expertise and passion in neurological rehabilitation, including FND, stroke, TBI and movement disorders. She is also the National Chair of the APA Neurology Group.

๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ Moderator:
Dr Aileen Eugenia Scully โ€“ Assistant Professor, Singapore Institute of Technology
An experienced neurological physiotherapist with over a decade of clinical and research experience across acute, outpatient and community settings.

๐Ÿ“Œ Why attend?
Physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to help individuals with FND regain function and independence โ€” but this requires specialised knowledge. This webinar delivers practical, evidence-based insights you can apply directly to clinical practice.

๐Ÿ” Curious about how magnetic fields influence tissue regeneration and human health?
What if electromagnetics could unlock new frontiers beyond drugs and conventional therapies? โšก๐Ÿงฒ

๐Ÿ’ก Join the Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) EPA Webinar as we delve into
โ€œBiological Magnetotransduction & its Physiological Implicationsโ€ โ€” an exciting exploration at the intersection of biophysics, regenerative medicine, and physiotherapy innovation.

๐ŸŽ“ Associate Professor Alfredo Franco-Obregรณn (National University of Singapore) brings a unique biophysical perspective to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. As Head of the BICEPS Laboratory at NUS, his pioneering work investigates how electromagnetic and mechanical forces drive tissue regeneration, enhance mitochondrial respiration, and trigger adaptive cellular responses through Magnetic Mitohormesis. His research spans skeletal muscle development, stem cell biology, cancer, human health and longevity, and even sustainable food production ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ”ฌ.

๐Ÿš€ Why attend?
Gain valuable insights into how emerging electromagnetic technologies may shape future clinical applications, expand the role of Electrophysical Agents (EPA), and influence physiotherapy practice beyond conventional approaches.

Our Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) President, A/Prof Kwah Li Khim has published a forum letter in The Straits Times on safeguarding professional standards and workforce capacity in allied health. Read it here: https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/forum/forum-safeguard-professional-standards-and-workforce-capacity-in-allied-health-sector

Key points:

โ€ข Transdisciplinary practice across allied health disciplines already happens daily, but this must happen within clearly defined limits.

โ€ข Compressed or fast-track conversion pathways risk diluting professional competencies and patient safety.

โ€ข Retraining existing allied health professionals does not grow the workforce and may further strain an already stretched sector.

To ensure your views on the training pathway are represented in the upcoming engagement between SPA council and CAHOO, please take 3 minutes to complete the survey: https://forms.gle/K3FduDze9L4UfupSA

Dear members,

Following the Ministry of Health (MOH)โ€™s recent announcement on changes to allied health professional training (https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/allied-health-professionals-to-be-trained-to-support-patients-holistically-ong-ye-kung), the Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA) is actively engaging stakeholders to understand the implications for physiotherapy education, professional development and scope of practice.

We have also submitted a response to The Straits Times based on early feedback from members, and we look forward to consolidating more perspectives in the days ahead.

We recognise that the announcement has raised many important questions. We are encouraged by the thoughtful reflections from colleagues across settings, and we remain committed to advocating for our profession.

To help us capture more viewpoints across the profession, please take a few minutes to complete our survey (https://forms.gle/K3FduDze9L4UfupSA).

SPA will share further updates as the situation progresses.
