Celli Tip: Is organic always good?

Not anything that is organic is healthier. The term organic relating to food means that the product of that particular food doesn’t involve the use of chemical, pesticides, antibiotics or other artificial chemicals. Basically safe to eat. But it doesn’t mean that the food is healthy. Snacks, cookies, biscuits that are organic still carries the same amount of empty calories, fat and sugar as regular non-organic snacks.

Celli Tip: Don't fall for the marketing hype!

One barrier to working out is the belief that you need to take a wide range of supplements, shakes and powders to go along with your exercise. While there are some supplements with good research to support their efficacy, there is no need to purchase anything. Eating whole, natural foods is far superior in keeping healthy and fit.

Most Easters are spent with yummy feasts over the weekend. However you can control the quality of food you indulge in during such festivities. Try prepping lower calorie options of the usual Easter dishes and add in more healthy veggie dishes to the spread.

Chocolates are also an integral part of this festive season, but you can cut out unnecessary calories and sugar content by eating dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate!

Enjoy your Easter weekend the healthy way!

Celli Tip: Do What You Love and Love What You Do

There’s a saying that goes “If you do what you love, you will never have to work a day in your life”. Its either we find something we love to do or find a way to love what we are currently doing. Even if we don’t have the opportunity to take our passion and make a career out of it, it is possible to find the silver lining in the work we do or make time to do things that keep us happy.

Celli Tip: Sleep Makes You Happy

Do you sleep soundly at night? Your body has its own internal clock that controls your sleeping cycle and waking hours. How our body gets ready for sleep is linked to a hormone called melatonin.

Melatonin levels vary in 24 hour cycles, it level increase in general between 9-10pm and then decrease in the morning. Although it is not essential for human sleep, we sleep better during the time that melatonin is secreted. Melatonin is produced from the neurotransmitter serotonin (known for inducing a state of calm and happiness). It is the hormone that induces the state of relaxation leading to sleep and many insomniacs are found to be low in this hormone.

In general, diets rich in vegetables, fruits and grain products contain considerable levels of dietary melatonin. Thus, the health benefits of diet-driven melatonin boosts is not to be the product of any single food.

Celli Tip: Work Away Your Nerves

In our high pressure society, it can be difficult to feel a sense of calmness or at ease in our hectic lifestyles. As is the case with certain drugs or talk therapy, studies prove exercise provides anxiety relief. When we exert energy and elevate our heart rates, our nervous system tends to better regulate itself in the time period following a workout. We feel more at ease, present, and many worries dissipate.

Celli Tip: Is Banana Your Key to Happiness?

Many of our moods are dependent on the chemicals in our brain. Any imbalances can leave you feeling off. For example, serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that mediated satisfaction, happiness and optimism.

According to some studies, diet could play a role in raising brain serotonin. A popular myth that is circulating in the internet is that eating food high in tryptophan increases the serotonin levels in the brain is unfortunately, false. A purified tryptophan and foods containing tryptophan have different effects on brain serotonin. Although purified tryptophan increases brain serotonin, foods containing tryptophan do not. The next time you read about bananas improving mood because of their serotonin content is not true. Although it is true that bananas contain serotonin, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. But this doesn’t mean you should not eat banana. Banana contain many important nutrients such as vitamin B6, C and potassium.

Nonetheless, the idea behind such studies is interesting and should be explored further but any causal attribution must remain speculative.
