Celli Tip: Is Banana Your Key to Happiness?
Many of our moods are dependent on the chemicals in our brain. Any imbalances can leave you feeling off. For example, serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that mediated satisfaction, happiness and optimism.
According to some studies, diet could play a role in raising brain serotonin. A popular myth that is circulating in the internet is that eating food high in tryptophan increases the serotonin levels in the brain is unfortunately, false. A purified tryptophan and foods containing tryptophan have different effects on brain serotonin. Although purified tryptophan increases brain serotonin, foods containing tryptophan do not. The next time you read about bananas improving mood because of their serotonin content is not true. Although it is true that bananas contain serotonin, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. But this doesn’t mean you should not eat banana. Banana contain many important nutrients such as vitamin B6, C and potassium.
Nonetheless, the idea behind such studies is interesting and should be explored further but any causal attribution must remain speculative.
