In a recent TODAY interview with Ms Deborah Ng, our Principal Counsellor, Mr James Chong, spoke about the rise of dark humour on social media.
He explained that dark humour may serve as a way to release tension without sounding too heavy. In his words, “If I can laugh at it, it has less power over me.”
Yet, Mr Chong also cautioned that dark humour can backfire. When jokes leave us feeling worse instead of lighter, or when they reinforce hopelessness, they stop being helpful. Over time, such humour may even affect how we view ourselves and push others away.
Used in balance, dark humour can build connection. But when overused, it may become a barrier that prevents healing.
