Today is International Playdate Day. Play is crucial for fine and gross motor skills development, language, creativity, memory, reasoning, self-regulation, resilience, executive functioning and communication. Playing with a peer further supports sharing, empathy, teamwork and reciprocity.

Real life, three dimensional experience is at the bottom of true language comprehension. No flashcards, screens, apps or AI can exchange the interaction with an actual human being who connects emotionally with the child while using actual objects and playing in a fun way.

The interaction between the child and a caregiver/parent/play partner is more important than the skill we are working on. The relationship and emotional engagement, the serve-and-return of reciprocity is what drives typical development and what we should use to promote progress with neurodivergent children.

Play is so important! It develops many skills (visual-spatial, fine motor, praxis, discrimination, social and language skills to name a few) and is at the centre of attention in early intervention.

"But you are just playing" is one of the things we as speech therapists hear often. It isn't JUST, it is EXACTLY what's needed to enhance child's cognitive skills (i.e., problem solving, memory), foster social-emotional development, helping kids understanding feelings and how to express them, how to negotiate. Pretend play supports development of language (building vocab, expanding meanings, understanding symbolic representation). It also promotes autonomy, supports praxis and imagination.
It isn't just play, it's the core work of childhood.
