Happy World Sight Day!

World Sight Day reminds us that our eyes need protection and care. Remember to !

Do note that schooling children even without vision correction should have an eye examination at least every two years and children who are wearing glasses/contact lenses should be examined annually to ensure that their eyes are healthy and that there are no other vision problems that could interfere with their school performance or affecting their safety.

One of the key rules for your child visual environment indoors is The Elbow Rule. When holding reading material or screens, your child should try to keep an elbow-to-wrist distance between anything they are viewing up close, and their eyes to ensure that the materials do not get too close.

You can demonstrate this to your child by making a fist and putting it next to your eyes.
Place the material where your elbow sits and this should be the closest any screen or book should get to your child's eyes when reading.

3. Tilting head or closing one eye to read
4. Frequent rubbing of eyes or
5. Complaining of frequent headaches

Excessive device usage for your child might cause inflammation, redness, and dryness of their eyes and digital eye strain. Digital eye strain can also cause your child to develop headaches, double vision and an inability to focus on objects properly.

Do ensure to monitor your child's screen time and help them to develop proper habits such as keeping the device at least 30cm away for sufficient distance (computer screens should be placed at least 50cm away) and keeping the use of devices to 30 min per session with breaks for eye rest in between. Do also ensure that there are sufficient lights to illuminate the room without causing any glare. 🖥💻📱
