// Some people tell me I have an ‘easy’ job. In a way they are right, I just have to teach what I love doing right? Teaching Yoga. It’s like getting a workout at the same time. Yes, it is fulfilling to see so many happy peaceful faces during Savasana. On the other hand, I’m working with many different individuals and guiding them for that one hour. Every single student who enters the studio has a different need and expectation from the class. Some want a sweaty workout session, some want to stretch and some just want to forget their worries and de-stress for one hour. Despite me reminding every student to let go of judgment and expectation before the class begins, there will be those who already have preconceived notions of what they want from the class, what I should teach and how it should be conducted. There have been students who smile at me after the class and yet wrote negative reviews online about how my class wasn’t challenging enough or how I didn’t give them enough arm balances or inversions. I teach from the intention of helping my students to practice safely so she or he can become stronger inside out. In the morning, our body is way stiffer with thicker fascia. Hence, I spend 15 minutes doing more warmups and stretching before we go into the Sun Salutations and Flow. Breathing practice Pranayama and Kriya are also a must before we practice the asanas, to prepare our mind and body for practice. Sometimes, my explanation on ‘listening to the body’ falls on deaf ears when all the student wants is to sweat it out and do challenging arm balances and inversions. Yoga is not about doing fancy poses like Headstand and Handstand. Yoga is listening to your body and breath whilst staying in the asana, quietening the mind whilst in pranayama and meditation and most importantly; this self awareness helps us to be kinder to ourselves and others around us. The next time you wish to do challenging poses or asanas, may I suggest that you attend my Arm Balance and Inversion class instead of a Basics or Flow class. It’s more fun and challenging. Even then, I will ask you to warm up for at least 15 minutes so you do not injure yourself. Practice safely and mindfully.🙏
