Most people are taught to look upward when their thinking feels offโ€”toward the brain itself. Weโ€™re told to optimize sleep, stack supplements, train our memory, or push through with caffeine and willpower. Yet for many, brain fog, low energy, and forgetfulness stubbornly persist despite doing โ€œall the right things.โ€

The missing piece is often below the neck.

The gutโ€“brain connection is one of the most powerful, and least understood, drivers of cognitive performance. As we goodbye to another challenging year in 2025 and are now in 2026, many of us naturally begin to reflect. We think about what we have achieved, what stretched us, what broke us a little, and what ultimately helped us grow. This is a familiar ritual at the individual level. But how often do organisations do the sameโ€”properlyโ€”and at all levels of the organisation?

Most organisations conduct reviews. Reviews are important, but they are also limited. They are usually centred on financial outcomes, operational metrics, dashboards, and KPIs. They tell us what happened, but rarely explain why it happened or how it felt to the people doing the work. Reviews are retrospective accounting exercises. Reflection, on the other hand, is a learning discipline.
