When Madam Tan Lee Chern's vision in her left eye went dark in November 2025, she thought she simply needed a new pair of spectacles. Instead, her optician urged her to go immediately to the emergency department, for her symptoms could be a sign of stroke. After seeing the NHG Eye Institute's eye specialists and neurologists at Woodlands Hospital, where what followed was a rare diagnosis and early management, she was then transferred to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for further treatment by the NHG Eye Institute and the National Neuroscience Institute โ a reminder of why timely, coordinated care matters.
Madam Tan was diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), a rare autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the central nervous system, primarily targeting the eyes and spine. It affects 4 in 100,000 in Singapore.
Diagnosing NMOSD requires sharp clinical instincts and deep specialist knowledge, supported by antibody testing. Asst Prof Kelvin Li, Consultant Neuro-ophthalmologist from the NHG Eye Institute (who is also an Ophthalmology Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Asst Prof Yeo Tianrong, who heads the department of neurology at the National Neuroscience Institute@TTSH, brought together expertise in ophthalmology and neurology to arrive at the diagnosis and act quickly. In NMOSD, speed is everything: nerve tissue, once damaged, does not regenerate.
Thanks to early detection and prompt treatment, life appears a lot brighter now for Madam Tan, who has been able to return to work as a cashier.
Her story reflects the strength of multidisciplinary care and the critical role that specialist expertise plays in tackling rare and complex conditions.
