Common misconceptions about Yoga:
•It’s only for flexible people.❎
It’s for EVERYONE. Yoga is meant to make the body feel open and good. Even if you’re not flexible, the goal is to allow your body to feel good, regardless of how you may look in the pose. People who think this way are focused on how they look or the perfection of the pose rather than the purpose of Yoga.
It’s not about how it looks. It about how it feels.
•It’s too slow.❎
Many people aren’t aware or knowledgeable on the various types of yoga. Each type caters to different purposes. I remember the first time I did Ashtanga Yoga, sweat was dripping down my nose in the very first 10mins of the class. Try different types before you stereotype yoga.
Also, due to common Asian mentality, there’s a lack of patience with the self. We have patience for our boss, our colleagues, listening to our relatives or friends. What about ourselves?
Sometimes, stillness is the best gift you can give to yourself.
•You can’t lose weight or tone your body through Yoga.❎
Again, try the different types of Yoga. People often associate Yoga with only stretching, flexibility and static state. There’s a whole lot more related to motion and flows, strength, core and balance, stamina, breath capacity, etc.
