Did abit of spring cleaning a couple of days back, and came across this photo. Such a timely find. It was taken circa 2005/06, the early days when Abundant Earth was a little herbal specialist shop in Cross St. We used it for our loyalty card. Finding it brought me back to the roots and raison d’etre for AE - to share the abundance of healing that nature freely provides, for each of us to understand that balance, health and vitality is the natural state of our body. Once we understand this, our perspective on health care changes from dependency to accountability, our motivation for healthy living changes from discipline to desire, and our priorities and what we do with our days come into full review.

To be honest, Abundant Earth has never been a business to me, I’ve always felt it was more a responsibility entrusted to me. And I have not honoured this responsibility for a while. So, I’ve decided to temporarily pause the online shop abundantearth.sg from 25/02/25. I say pause, because we’ll be back in the not too distant future with a smaller, more meaningful offering, perhaps in a different way. I’ve had the opportunity to hold a some wellness workshops in the last few months, which reignited my love of sharing and educating, so we may look at incorporating more of that. In the meantime, to make way for the new, we’re having a sitewide sale with up to 50% off loose leaf herbal teas, essential oils, and other goodies from now til 25th Feb. Stock is limited, so fastest fingers first! If you’re looking for sizes larger than the retail packs online, please DM me, or email alina@abundantearth.sg

During this pause, I will be on the road, to look at interesting projects, meet inspiring people and learn/exchange/share natural healing traditions and wisdom. First stop, US of A! I’m heading to Arizona at the end of this month. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve touched American soil, and first time to AZ, so would love some good suggestions!

To those of you who are still around, thank you for being here 🙏 I’m excited to bring you the things ‘I’ve always wanted to....’ bring to Abundant Earth 🌱

2020 has been a first for all of us. Never in our lifetimes have we been as restricted in our movements, freedom to see family and friends, work, socialise. We have different ways of processing and handling stress, some better than others. Whatever you are feeling or fearing right now, remember that you are adaptable and resilient, and you will amaze yourself, with just how much, when you look back on this year. This, like other challenging times in your life, will pass.

I wanted to talk about Cedarwood, as it is extremely grounding and useful oil for times of upheaval, uncertainty, chaos, and restlessness. The Cedar tree symbolises strength, resilience, and fortitude to weather the storm. Known for their longevity, cedars thrive in extreme conditions, at high altitudes. Lebanon cedars have lifespans of 1,000 years. If only she could talk, imagine the stories she would tell you.

The Egyptians used Cedarwood for embalming, and in their perfumes and cosmetics. Resistant to decay, insects, and warping, cedarwood was used in ancient times to build ships and temples, including Solomon's temple.

Resilient to external threats and harsh conditions, the cedar tree stands firm, unswaying. It continues to grow towards the light, onwards and upwards, with the quiet confidence that, after the turmoil and uncertainties have passed, she remains, standing strong.

Cedarwood essential oil has a woody, sweet, balsamic aroma that radiates warmth. Use a few drops in your vaporiser when you are feeling anxious, scattered, insecure, afraid, or are going through changes and uncertainty in life. It will help ground and centre you. Combine it with a citrus oil like bergamot or mandarin, to lift your mood, or with sandalwood or frankincense for reflection, eg. during your yoga or meditation practice. Do the qualities of cedarwood sound like anyone in your life? If so, hug this gem tightly, and let them know how much you treasure them! ✨

Stressed? Exhuasuted? Uninspired? Frustrated? Depressed? Take some time to spend in nature this weekend, be it a nature walk, in your garden, visiting a nursery, or simply intentionally being aware of the greenery that surrounds us in our garden city. Psychologists have found that green is a mood boosting, relaxing colour. For example patients in hospital rooms overlooking trees enjoyed improved recovery times compared to those in rooms with a view of brick walls.

When you are relaxed and happy, you are able to absorb information better, more creative, and enjoy better quality relationships. Nature therapy is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to improve the quality of your life right now! 🌿🍃🙌

Pics 2-4 is of a spicy salsa that I whipped up, mostly from The Green Girl's veggies. It's perfect for these times, as it contains immune boosting garlic, onion, lemon and chill,i with antioxidant rich peppers and tomatoes. Sprinkle in abit of cumin, salt and pepper to taste, and blend it all up. Goes perfectly with plain crackers or tortilla chips! 😋

Around this time last year, I had the privelege to spend a few days at a Maasai lodge in the Maasai Mara, Kenya. The Maasai, known for being fearless warriors, make up around 2% of Kenya's population. Many of them still live a simple, nomadic life, yet quite connected, as smart phones are not uncommon. They live in communities under the governance of tribal elders. They have a deep, respect and relationship with nature and animals. During our walks, they showed me some of the plants they use, for their medical, dietary, and daily needs. In turn, I shared some essential oils with them, which they found intense to smell at first - to be expected, I guess, as I imagine that their sense of smell, like their eyesight, to be alot sharper than ours, and they most likely have never smelt such plant aromas in a concentrated form before. After they got over the initial hit, they said Lavender and
Eucalyptus smelled good!

SO thankful to have such amazing memories of our time with the Maasai, and the fascinating exchange of using plants to nourish and heal. Gentle souls with warrior blood!

1: traditional dress and colours for Maasai men
2: most of the Maasai know how to find, identify and use the trees and plants around them, which is the first line of treatment if they fall ill
3. they will fill their pouches with this bark, and chew on it when walking long distances. It contains carbohydrates that give them energy, as well as quite alot of water, keeping them hydrated
4: the underside of this leaf is quite rough, and used to clean and buff nails, also to sand branches used to make utensils
5: these thorns are used as needles to sew garments, bags, etc.
6. take a bunch of these leaves and place it under your armpits for a natural deodorant!
7: so interesting watching a tree branch transformed into a stirrer, used to stir soup

☀️ Have you had your daily dose of sunshine? ☀️ Vitamin D is one of the most talked about vitamins right now. Produced naturally in our skin when exposed to sunlight, it is essential for immune, bone, neuromuscular, metabolic health, and more. Why the buzz around it now? Vitamin D, key for a healthy immune response, the first line of defence against infection, has shown to protect against acute respiratory infection, such as the common flu, and Covid-19. Simply put, healthy vitamin D levels equal strong immune reponse. More research is showing Covid-19 patients with healthy blood levels of vitamin D tend to have less severe symptoms and better outcomes.

Despite enjoying sunlight most of the year, vitamin D deficiency is common here in South East Asia. Keeping out of the sun, liberal use of sunscreen, and, now, more of us working from home, means less sun exposure. If you spend little time under the sun, consider supplementing with vitamin D3. Including more fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines and tuna, and cod liver oil will help to boost your vitamin D levels. If you're not sure about your vitamin D levels, you can take a blood test to get your baseline levels.
