๐ŸŒ™ Understanding the Stages of Sleep ๐ŸŒ™

Have you heard of sleep cycles and the different stages of sleep? Here's a quick summary of what your body goes through every night! ๐Ÿ’ค

Non REM Sleep
Stage 1๏ธโƒฃ (N1)
This is the lightest stage of sleep, where we commonly drift and out of and can be awakened easily. It lasts for only about 5 - 10 minutes.

Stage 2๏ธโƒฃ (N2)
This is where your heart rate slows, and the body starts to cools down after N1. It makes up a whopping 50% of your sleep time, but is needed to enter deeper sleep stages.

Stage 3๏ธโƒฃ (N3)
Also known as deep sleep, this stage is crucial for physical restoration and growth. It comprises typically 10 - 20% of total sleep time in young adults, and decreases with age.

REM Sleep
This is where most of your dreams occur ๐Ÿ’ญ, and consists rapid eye movements (REM), increased brain activity and temporary muscle paralysis. REM sleep is crucial for cognitive functions such as learning, memory and mood regulation. It accounts for about 20% of total sleep - with each REM period getting longer with every sleep cycle.

Each sleep cycle, going from N1>N2>N3>REM lasts about 90 - 120 minutes, and experts recommend we get about 4 - 6 full sleep cycles for a full night's rest! ๐Ÿ›Œ
