In 1974, scientists found that the use of chlorine in the disinfection of water resulted in byproducts harmful to health, including residual chlorine from chemical reactions, i.e. chloroform, bromoform, bromo-2 methane, and chlorine dimethane -- substances proven to have a carcinogenic effect on the human body. Therefore, both good and bad filtration systems exist today, many of which require high volume of treatment substances and result in a burden on the environment. Photocatalysis utilizes the powerful hydroxyl radical (OH-) with even stronger oxidation ability than ozone (O3) to remove residual chlorine, bacteria and viruses, odor, and other contaminants from tap water. It reduces the size of water molecules, removes magnesium carbonate and calcium from water, and restores water to a more alkaline state.
