💡Here’s another reason why individuals with ADHD tend to be late!

🧐We often plan the big steps… but our brain skips over all the smaller, connecting ones that actually make things happen.

🧠 Think through your morning routine… what steps do you tend to miss when planning your time?

💡Here’s another reason why individuals with ADHD tend to be late - we do best-case scenario planning.

👩🏻 I realized I do that a lot… and then wonder why I’m always rushing and short of time!

❓Are you like that too? How much earlier would you have to wake up if you didn’t plan based on best-case scenario 🫢👀?

Last time, we saw Boss Brain being late because he underestimated how long it would take to get ready.

🔍 But why do individuals with ADHD keep underestimating how long things will take?

💡 One reason is time blindness — a common challenge in ADHD where the brain struggles to accurately feel or track time.

This can lead to underestimating time (like in the previous comic) or overestimating, which can bring its own challenges.

🕙More on overestimating and its challenges another day!

Oops, this comic is a little late… classic example of me underestimating my own timelines 😅. But honestly, that makes it a fitting lead-in to today’s topic!

In the last comic, Boss Brain was late for his appointment.

🔍Let’s break it down: what actually caused that?

💡One reason is time underestimation — when we believe a task will be quick, but it almost always takes longer than expected.

🤔Is this something you’ve noticed in yourself too? Can you think of a time when your task ended up taking way longer than you planned?

Seems familiar? Know anyone like that?

⏰We all struggle with time management and being late from time to time, but for those with ADHD, the struggle is even greater.

😞It’s not just about occasional delays—it’s a persistent challenge that affects daily life in ways that many don’t see.

💡Curious about what makes it so much harder? Stay tuned for our next post!

In our last post, we talked about overcoming temporal discounting by making the future feel closer. Another way to do this is to ✋pause and picture the future 🤔💭

It’s easy to focus on what feels good right now, but a quick mental check-in can shift your perspective.

💡Remember, a small pause to picture the future today can save a lot of stress tomorrow!

Temporal discounting elongates the space between action and consequences, making distant outcomes feel less urgent. This is especially so for those with ADHD.

🚫Waiting for natural consequences far off in the future often doesn’t work.

✔️To compensate for this, shorten that gap and use strategies that help you feel the future.

Here are 3️⃣ ways to bring the future closer and boost your motivation.

📱Make consequences immediate - this can be through a reward (10 mins of social media after you have completed 200 words of your report) or consequences (no social media until you have written 200 words of your report)

👩🏻‍💻🧑🏻‍💻👩🏻‍💻Make consequences frequent- schedule regular check ins with others such as study partners, friends, mentors or your team mates

💸Externalise consequence - this can include financial penalties or forfeits. It is about adding an extra layer of pressure from outside forces to make the consequences feel more tangible. If you feel it, you will remember it!

🧑🏻‍💻Since we know how people with ADHD are impacted by a shorter time horizon and temporal discounting, we can’t just rely on how we feel in the moment to get things done!

📈So, how can we manage time better—balancing the present with future needs to ensure today’s actions set us up for success?

Stay tuned for more strategies!

💡Let’s explore the second key concept: temporal discounting.

🎮When combined with the concept of time horizon, it becomes clear how it impacts those with ADHD. A shorter time horizon leads to stronger temporal discounting, meaning that individuals with ADHD often feel the present more acutely than the future.

‼️This makes it harder for them to prioritize a distant future goal over present gratification.

😵‍💫 Managing tasks isn’t just about willpower - it’s about how we perceive and manage time.

⏳Effective time management requires the ability to see the future and feel its impact.

🧐 Seeing the future is tied to time horizon, which helps us plan ahead. In our next post, we will dive into the concept of temporal discounting, which is tied to feeling the future and how it affects our ability to act on tasks.

Does this sound familiar🫢

🎮 Choosing immediate rewards and leaving tasks until the last minute, rather than sticking to a plan.

👩🏻‍💻 For some, it might feel like it works—when the deadline looms, adrenaline kicks in, hyperfocus takes over, and you manage to get it done.

🤯But here’s the catch: this “last-minute success” often comes at a high cost. The stress and anxiety it creates can be overwhelming, and relying on this habit is far from sustainable. Over time, this pattern weakens your ability to plan and follow through consistently. It can lead to burnout and hinder the development of effective time management strategies, ultimately making it harder to achieve your long-term goals.

💥After a disruption, people with ADHD often struggle to get back on track. While most neurotypical brains can quickly refocus, the ADHD brain may lose track of the original task, leading to a shift toward unrelated thoughts or distractions.

🙇‍♀️This makes it harder to stay engaged, maintain momentum, and regain the flow of work.
