Mediterranean Diet Promotes a Healthier Pregnancy.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center studied more than 10,000 pregnant women expecting their first child. Among the 8,000 women who persisted, women who consistently ate a Mediterranean diet were
- 21% less likely to have poor pregnancy outcome
- 28% less likely to have pregnancy-related high blood pressure
- 37% less likely to have pregnancy-related diabetes

What is a Mediterranean diet? Mediterranean diet is a cuisine commonly found in Mediterranean countries; it consists mainly of plant-based food such as
- beans, nuts, seeds,
- fruits,
- herbs and spices,
- vegetables,
- whole grains - for carbohydrates
- olive oil - as the only source of added fats

Individuals can take dairy products, poultry and seafood in moderation.

However, pregnant women should be careful not to consume food with high heavy-metal or chemical content, such as wild deep-sea fishes.

Are Men More Prone to Heart Problems?

Ever wondered why females generally have high life expectancy than males? Is it because men are more prone to riskier activities such as skydiving? 21st-century medical science is shedding some light on this.

In a laboratory study by York University, blood vessels behave differently in male and female mice. Female blood vessels tend to replicate more rapidly; thus, they have better self-repair ability and are more capable of supplying the body with oxygen and nutrient. After subjecting to a high-fat diet, male blood vessels are more prone to inflammation and subsequent damage than female blood vessels.

Since we are not mice, can we say this has nothing to do with us?
No. For example, men are twice as likely to have heart attacks than women.

Regardless of your risk profile, heart diseases are the second most common cause of death and are an essential concern.
Invest in your health - eat well, exercise regularly and monitor your health.

It is confirmed - We are more sluggish during the pandemic!

In 2020 and 2021, working from home, cancellation of activities, and social restrictions were standard features of our lives. The most recent National Population Health Survey revealed that we indeed have lesser movements. The percentage of Singaporeans fulfilling the health recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensive physical activity weekly has dropped from 80% in 2019 to 71% in 2021.

The percentage of Singaporeans who exercise during leisure time is also low. The age group of 60 to 74 years old has the lowest proportion of people with regular exercise (24%), while the most active age group is 18 to 29 years old, with a mere 40.5% of people exercising regularly.

Regular exercise is essential to maintain a healthy blood sugar level and heart health. Let's start regular exercise, especially our numerous feasts during the festive season.

Black Tea for Better Heart Health

Abdominal Aortic Calcification measures calcium deposition into the aorta, the main blood vessel carrying blood pumped by our heart. By extension, it measures the level of hardening of the aorta and predicts the risk of heart disease.

Flavonoids are coloured substances produced by plants; they exert beneficial effects such as anti-oxidant. They are available in food such as tea, fruits and red wine. In a study of over 800 elderly subjects, the regular consumption of black tea lowered the risk of significant Abdominal Aortic Calcification by 16% to 42%. In this study, the consumption of other sources of flavonoids, namely fruit juice, chocolate and red wine, did not yield the same protective effect.

That's good news for tea drinkers. Nonetheless, for the uninitiated, tea may cause problems such as headaches and fast heartbeat; it is also unsuitable for individuals with issues such as irregular heart rates.

Whether or not you drink tea regularly, maintaining good heart health does not rely just on drinking tea. Invest in your health by having a healthy diet, active lifestyle and optimum blood pressure and blood sugar management.

Coffee & Tea: Good or Bad for Health?

In a decade-long UK study on nearly half a million subjects, moderate coffee or tea consumption may reduce death from heart diseases and all causes.

Coffee drinkers who drink one to two cups of coffee daily have a lower death rate than those who do not. The death rate becomes higher than usual when daily consumption is four cups or more.

For tea drinkers, the optimum consumption is two to four cups daily. Beyond these points, the reduction in the death rate tapers off.

If you don't drink coffee or tea, fret not. The protective effect of these drinks is 10% at best.

Investing in our health is a multi-pronged effort and let us work towards better health today!

15 minutes of Moderate Exercise Everyday - Keep Breast Cancer Relapse at Bay

The authoritative Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently featured a research study on the impact of exercise on breast cancer survival. In this study of 315 women, at least 15 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activities reduced breast cancer relapse by 60%.

Moderate-intensity exercises are those that will increase your heart rate by 50 to 60% (as compared to your resting heart rate). For details on what you can do, please read https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-does-moderate-exercise-mean-anyway/.

Apart from protection from breast cancer relapse, exercise may also bring better blood sugar management. Let's sweat it out to have a healthier you!

Do Potato Chips and French Fried Count as Servings of Vegetables?

I speculated that the researchers from Edith Cowan University had heard these "wise guy" questions before and did research examing the effect of vegetables and analysed the health effect of potatoes separately.

In their study, there was no statistical link between the consumption of potatoes and the development of diabetes. When examining the details, boiled and roasted potatoes had a neutral effect on the risk of diabetes. In contrast, mashed potatoes (probably due to the added butter) and fried potatoes posed an increased risk of diabetes. Sorry guys, please don't take potato chips to fulfil your vegetable quota.

Like rice, potatoes are a rich source of carbohydrates and are shunned by many as a promoter of weight gain and other harmful effects. Nevertheless, compared to polished rice, potatoes have more than just carbohydrates; potatoes also have vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Greens Beat Diabetes

In a Danish study of more than 50,000 subjects,
individuals who took four or more daily servings of vegetables (about 319 grams) (e.g. one serving of leafy vegetables is about half a cup) had:
- Healthier body weight ( body mass index of 0.35 kg/m2 lower)
- 21% lower probability of Type 2 diabetes

Among vegetables, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables (which belong to the Brassica genus, e.g. kale, broccoli, and cauliflower) offer the highest protection against diabetes.

Start powering up your health and munch on the greens today!

Poor Sleep = Risk of Diabetes?

The University of South Australia recently published a study on more than 1,000 subjects. The study highlighted that those who had problems falling asleep or short duration of sleep, or poor quality of sleep were more likely to have weight issues and more unsatisfactory health test results such as high cholesterol. These observations often precede the diagnosis of diabetes.

The result of this study supports the recommendations of health authorities and experts (such as the US CDC) to get better sleep.
Harms posed by poor sleep include:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Obesity
Whether you have diabetes or are at risk of diabetes, or you are otherwise healthy, give your body the needed break for a healthier you!
