Do Facials Clear Pigmentation? (Part 1)
This is a question we hear very often — especially from patients who have undergone multiple facial sessions with the expectation that pigmentation will “fade away.” From a medical standpoint, facials work primarily on the skin surface. They help cleanse, hydrate, exfoliate dead skin cells, and temporarily improve brightness. This can create the appearance of a mild, short-term fade, especially for superficial dullness or uneven tone.
However, most pigmentation concerns — such as melasma, sun spots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — originate deeper within the skin. Facials do not reach the pigment-producing cells or address the underlying triggers such as melanocyte overactivity, inflammation, or vascular factors. If pigmentation has not improved after weeks to months of appropriate topical care, repeating more facials is unlikely to change the outcome. At that point, improvement usually requires a medical assessment and a targeted plan that may include prescription-grade skincare or carefully selected energy-based treatments.
🎥 In this video, Dr. Thean explains why facials may give temporary brightness — but why they do not clear true pigmentation.
