Too Full? Too Empty? Decode Your Sensory World Using Just Two Cups!
As an occupational therapist, one of the most common questions I hear from parents is: "How does sensory processing impact my child?"
To explain this, I use a simple analogy:
*Imagine two cups*
- 🥤A *small cup* fills up quickly (low sensory threshold = easily overwhelmed).
- 🫖A *big cup* takes longer to fill (high sensory threshold = often understimulated).
This visual has helped hundreds of parents finally "click" with how their child's brain processes sensory input-and why certain situations lead to meltdowns, shutdowns, or disengagement. It's not just about "behavior"... it's about understanding their unique sensory cup size!
✨Why This Matters✨
When we learn to "read" their cup, we can:
✅Prevent overflow (overstimulation) by adjusting their
environment.
✅Refill gently (understimulation) with activities that engage
their senses.
✅Build strategies to help them stay regulated, focused, and
joyfully engaged in daily life.
