As healthcare advances, smart and AI-enabled technologies are stepping in to help our clinicians diagnose faster and create more personalised treatment plans.
At our hospital, we are always looking for ways to improve patient care โ and that means teaming up with academia and industry partners to drive innovation.
At this year's Synapxe AI and MedTech showcases, several of our emerging innovations from our Rehabilitation Medicine and Ophthalmology Departments were featured. Think AI-powered frailty screening, a 3D gait analyser, and even a self-automated eye testing kiosk!

There are approximately 15,500 tiny hair cells in the inner ear that help us detect sound. Prolonged exposure to loud noises over the years can cause these delicate cells to become permanently damaged.
In this Care to Go Beyond video series, Mr. Choo Wen Yan, our Senior Audiologist, takes a deep dive into the anatomy of the ear and explains the impact of noise-induced hearing loss โ a condition that is preventable. He also shares practical tips on how to protect your hearing.

TTSH is now a Mentoring Centre under the International Society of Nephrologyโs (ISN) Sister Renal Centre programme, supporting Emerging Centres like the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in the Philippines.
Over the past seven years, our Department of Renal Medicine has collaborated closely with NKTI โ with support from the Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology โ to strengthen kidney care systems through knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Together, we have helped NKTI achieve key milestones, including:
โข Expanding its peritoneal dialysis programme
โข Establishing a specialised glomerulonephritis clinic that provides advanced care for complex cases
โข Developing clinician handbooks
โข Leading nationwide training and research efforts

Effective communication is a critical skill to have in any job - but what about nursing?
Speaking on CNA's 'Work It' Podcast, our Senior Nurse Manager Patrick Lin shared on how communications play a role in a high-anxiety and fast-paced environment such as healthcare. He highlighted the importance of speaking from a place of calmness, taking meaningful pauses, and acknowledging the power of non-verbal cues.
More affectionately known as 'Brother' Patrick, he has been a nurse for 10 years, having spent most of his time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he found himself being an advocate and a 'family member' for patients who were isolated in the wards. He is one of our recipients for this year's prestigious MOH Nurses' Merit Awards.

Striving for Better Caregiver Training ๐ช๐ผ
Lee Bin pioneered a comprehensive oral suctioning training programme for caregivers in 2023, facing significant initial resistance and skepticism from staff accustomed to traditional methods. Believing that caregiver training could be more effective and safer for patients, she actively sought feedback from more than 80 caregivers to understand their concerns and reshape the programme's approach.
When early training methods proved ineffective, she demonstrated remarkable resilience by developing an innovative, hands-on learning model. She also collaborated with Nursing colleagues to adapt their training programme, and together, both teams created the simulation skills lab for caregivers to learn critical caregiving skills: oral suctioning, nasogastric tube feeding, and tracheostomy-related care.
Lee Binโs persistence led to dramatic improvements, with caregiver competency rates rising from 50% to 80% within six months. By the end of 2024, her determination had transformed an initially challenging project into a successful programme implemented across all the hospitalโs inpatient wards. The impact is evident in the 100% positive feedback from caregivers, demonstrating how her resilience in the face of obstacles led to meaningful healthcare improvements.
Lee Bin was presented the Dare to Do Award at the Public Sector Transformation Awards 2025; the award is conferred to public officers who embody the spirit of recognising opportunity, taking risks, and persevering despite challenges.

In a shared mission to eliminate Hepatitis C in Singapore, TTSH and HCSA Community Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 28 July 2025 to formalise the Educate, Test, Treat! (ETT) programme. The signing, witnessed by Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State for Health and for Digital Development and Information, marks a major step forward following the pilot launch in 2022.
Through ETT, individuals at higher risk, such as former drug offenders in Singapore, can gain more accessible Hepatitis C screening through saliva-based testing instead of blood test, and connecting those in need with specialist care and treatment at TTSH to prevent serious liver complications.
Supported by Gilead Sciences Inc. and the Tzu Chi Foundation (Singapore), this initiative moves us closer to a healthier, more inclusive futureโand to our goal of eliminating Hepatitis C in Singapore by 2030.
TTSH is spearheading a new "Hub & Spoke" trauma care model to enhance patient outcomes in Central Singapore. Acting as the central hub, TTSH will manage the most complex trauma cases, while five "spoke" hospitalsโKhoo Teck Puat Hospital, Woodlands Health, Sengkang General Hospital, Raffles Hospital, and KK Womenโs and Childrenโs Hospitalโwill handle moderate and less severe cases.
Unlike traditional systems where all trauma cases go directly to the main hospital, this bi-directional model allows critically injured patients to be first stabilised at the nearest spoke hospital before being transferred to TTSH for advanced care. The model would fully roll out by September 2025 and may serve as a prototype for national adoption.
โThis approach significantly reduces the burden on the main trauma centre and makes more efficient use of resources, reflecting a right-sited, patient-centred model,โ said Adj Assistant Prof Teo Li-Tserng, Regional Director of Central Region Trauma Services, and Director of TTSH Trauma Centre.
TTSH's Trauma Centre serves as the hub, specialising in the most critic.al trauma cases; other hospitals are the spokes. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.

At Tan Tock Seng Hospitalโs palliative care ward, healing takes many forms. Through gentle brushstrokes and melodies, our patients discover creative ways to express themselves and feel whole again, even in their most vulnerable moments.
Mdm Lim, a patient in her advanced stage of illness had been battling with chest discomfort but refrained from telling her family, for fear of saddening them. To help relieve her discomfort, our palliative team introduced art therapy as a means of emotional release and healing. During the art therapy session, Mdm Lim associated the piercing sensation in her chest with each dot she painted on the rock. While the act of painting was cathartic, the rock also symbolised her strength to live, uplifted by the care and love copiously showered on her by her family.
In loving memory of Mdm Lim who has passed on peacefully, she left a memento for her children and grandchildren:
