Hey mums-to-be! Stop scrolling and read this πŸ€°πŸ»πŸ‘‹

Pregnancy is a profound experience and will change your body in ways you never expected. But did you know that it can also affect your vision? πŸ˜±πŸ‘€

Here are several vision-related issues which expectant mothers often experience.

β˜‘οΈ Blurred Vision - Hormonal changes in the body (especially shifting estrogen levels) can cause fluid build up in the cornea, thereby altering its shape and ultimately causing blurred vision.
β˜‘οΈ Dry Eyes - Hormonal changes can also affect tear production causing dryness and irritation.
β˜‘οΈ Diabetic Retinopathy - Expectant mothers who suffer from diabetic retinopathy may experience vision issues. Elevated glucose levels can cause swelling in the lens and affect eye sight.
β˜‘οΈ Pre-eclampsia Symptoms - Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication which causes elevated blood pressure levels. It can cause women to experience blurred vision and flashes of light among other symptoms.
β˜‘οΈ Fluid Retention - While It is normal for expectant mothers to experience fluid retention in their body like the hands and feet, fluid can also build up in the eyes leading to puffiness and swelling of the eyelids.

While issues like blurred vision and fluid retention often go away after child birth, symptoms like a sudden loss of vision or flashes of light may be a red flag for underlying health issues like pre-eclampsia 🚩 If you experience any vision-related issues, we strongly recommend for you to contact your doctor to get it checked out.

🚨Attention parents everywhere: Stop scrolling and read this!🚨

Did you know, according to the 2018 National DQ Impact Report, Singaporean children between the ages of 8-12, spend at least 35 hours a week in front of their screens purely for entertainment purposes 😱 This doesn't even factor in screen time spent on assignments!

Prolonged and excessive screen time can cause eye health issues. These include:

➑️ Increased risk of myopia (nearsightedness)
➑️ Digital eye strain
➑️ Blue light exposure which leads to eye strain and impacts sleeping patterns
➑️ Blurry vision
➑️ Painful headaches due to eye strain and fatigue
➑️ Dry and irritated eyes

Encourage your kids to take regular breaks when using their devices. The 20-20-20 rule is a great way to give their eyes a rest. This involves looking at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds every 20 minutesπŸ“±πŸ’™ It is also important to limit screen time where possible.

October is World Blind Awareness Month πŸ“†

This is a time dedicated to raising awareness about visual impairment and blindness. Here are few ways we can meaningfully remember World Blindness Awareness Month.

πŸ‘οΈβ€πŸ—¨οΈ Let's come together to support and empower those who are visually impaired. This can take on many forms from advocating for inclusive hiring practices to supporting programmes which offer accessible tools for the visually impaired. Together, we can make a difference 🀝

πŸ’ͺ Consider supporting various charities and organisations that assist visually impaired individuals.

One organisation in particular that you can consider supporting is Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH). SAVH supports individuals who have been certified as having low vision (partially sighted) or blindness by an eye doctor. Learn more about SAVH and how you can help when you click here: https://savh.org.sg/

πŸ’‘ Regular eye check-ups are essential for maintaining good eye health and preventing vision loss.

On 10th of October 2024, we celebrate World Sight Day! This day is meant to raise awareness about eye conditions and visual impairments which can affect people globally 🌎 πŸ‘“

This day also serves as a reminder about the importance of caring for our eyes; and several different ways we can do so.

Here are a few helpful lifestyle choices that can support overall eye health and visual clarity ✨

- Fixing regular eye screenings every year πŸ₯Ό
- Maintaining a healthy diet filled with superfoods that support eye health πŸ₯•
- Limiting screen time and taking regular breaks to avoid eye strain πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ’»
- Using topical lubricants to keep you eyes moist and prevent dryness, which can lead to irritation and inflammation πŸ‘€
- Wearing protective eyewear to shield your eyes from harmful UV exposure 😎

Let's also remember that there are less fortunate communities and regions around the world that lack access to essential services including critical treatments for eye conditions and visual impairment πŸ‘“ We encourage you to consider supporting charitable organisations which provide quality eye care for the needy.

September if the month dedicated to Healthy Ageing Month! πŸ“† It's no secret that as we age, our body begins to experience wear and tear but maintaining good lifestyle habits can help us age gracefully and support overall health ✨

Our eyes, just like other parts of our body will also begin to show signs of ageing. These include difficulty focusing on close objects and impaired night vision, among other changes in vision. Furthermore, as we age, we are more likely to develop conditions like cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) 😱

But there are some steps that you can take to protect your vision as you age! These include:
1. Adopting a healthy diet made up of eye-healthy foods πŸ₯•
2. Avoid smoking which can heighten your chances of developing vision-related diseases 🚭
3. Using sunglasses and hats to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays β˜€οΈ
4. Managing chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure which can lead to diabetic retinopathy πŸ‘€
5. Making exercise a daily part of your routine to boost blood flow and support healthy vision 😎

Additionally regular eye examinations are instrumental in detecting underlying diseases in its earliest stages!

Attention makeup lovers everywhere! Stop scrolling and read this πŸ‘‹πŸš¨

Ladies, don't we love using makeup? 🀩 From blush to mascara, lip gloss to eyeshadow, makeup has the power to boost our confidence and help us feel our best! πŸŽ‰ However, it is important to maintain proper hygiene practices to mitigate any impact on our eye health.

βœ…Clean Brushes Regularly: Dirty makeup brushes can harbour bacteria that may lead to eye infections like conjunctivitis. Clean them on a weekly basis with warm water and mild soap.
βœ…Choose Quality Products: Shop for hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist-tested cosmetics to reduce the risk of eye irritation.
βœ…Throw Out Expired Makeup: Mascara and eyeliner should be replaced every 3-6 months to avoid bacterial infections. Expired makeup is a breeding ground for germs, and can easily lead to painful styes on the eyelids.
βœ…Gentle Removal: Use a gentle makeup remover and avoid harsh rubbing that can damage delicate eye skin. Naturally derived removers such as coconut oil and aloe vera are popular options. However, cleansing should then be followed on using specially formulated lid cleansers to remove any residue around the eyelashes, which can clog up oil glands and lash follicles on the eyelids and lead to styes, chalazia and eye infections.
