Trauma can be caused by any event that stresses us intensely, overwhelms us, and is more than what our coping can take. It could be an acute once off event or a series of events that occur over a prolonged period. Our mind and body are both impacted. Sometimes even though time have elapsed, these impact remains within our mind and body.
For some individuals, their IBS symptoms might trigger some of their trauma responses. Or they might have a previous experience of IBS symptoms that was traumatic that make it hard for them to feel safe with their body.
In psychology sessions, we not only help to cope with IBS symptoms but also address the underlying trauma.
