ကျွန်ုပ်သည်၂၀၁၆ခုနှစ်တွင် Active Global အဖွဲ့အစည်းအောက်တွင် Live-in Caregiver အဖြစ် စတင်အလုပ်လုပ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။ကျွနုပ်၏ပထမဆုံးသူနာပြုသူမှာအသက်၇၈နှစ်ရှိသည့်အဖိုးတစ်ဉီးဖြစ်ပြီးဆီးချိူမေ့မြောရောဂါနှင့်လက်အာရုံသွေးကြောကျဉ်းရောဂါရှိသူဖြစ်ပါသည်။တစ်ခါတစ်ရံအဖိုးသည်စိတ်ညစ်ပြီးလူမမြင်ချင်သည့်အခါများရှိခဲ့ပါသည်။ထိုအခါတိုင်းတွင်ကျွနုပ်သည်သနားစွာဆက်ဆံရမည်ဟုကိုယ်တိုင်သတိပေးပြီး Caregiver အဖြစ်စွမ်းအားအပြည့်ဖြင့်လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့ပါသည်။အနာဂတ်တွင်အဖိုးသည်စိတ်အေးလာပြီးကျွန်ုပ်တို့နှင့်ပြန်လည်စကားပြောလာကြပါသည်။

ကျွန်ုပ်သည်အဖိုးအား၈နှစ်ကျော်ကြာပေါင်းသင်းစောင့်ရှောက်ခဲ့ပါသည်တစ်နေ့တာသုံးသပ်မှုများ၊အသက်လက္ခဏာများစစ်ဆေးခြင်း၊နေရာအနှံသန့်ရှင်းစွာထိန်းထိမ်းခြင်းနှင့်တစ်ခါတစ်လေသီးသန့်အဖိုးအတွက်ဆပ်ပြာချက်အနည်းငယ်ပြုလုပ်ပေးခြင်းတို့ဖြင့်နေ့စဉ်ဆောင်ရွက်ခဲ့ပါသည်။မနက်တိုင်းကျွန်ုပ်သည်အဖိုးအားမျက်နှာပြေချစ်ကြည်စွာစကားပြောပြီးကော်ဖီဆိုင်သို့ညွန်ဆောင်သွားကာနံနက်စာသုံးဆောင်စေခဲ့ပါသည်။နေအိမ်တွင်လည်းကျွန်ုပ်သည်အဖိုးအားလက်တောင့်ခါခြင်းစသည့်လုပ်ငန်းလေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများပြုလုပ်ပေးပြီး၊မီဒီယာသတင်းများဖတ်ခြင်း၊တီဗီကြည့်ခြင်းတို့ကဲ့သို့ပျော်ရွှင်ဖွယ်အချိန်ဖြုန်းစရာများတွင်ပါဝင်စေခဲ့ပါသည်။အဖိုးကိုစောင့်ရှောက်ရခြင်းကိုကျွန်ုပ်တကယ်ချစ်မြတ်နိုးခဲ့ပါသည်။အချိန်ကြာလာတာနဲ့အမျှအဖိုးသည်ကျွန်ုပ်၏အသက်တာတွင်အရေးကြီးသူတစ်ဉီးဖြစ်လာခဲ့ပြီးသေဆုံးသွားစဉ်ကျွန်ုပ်အနက်စိတ်မကောင်းဆုံးဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။သို့သော်ကျွန်ုပ်သည်အဖိုးနှင့်တွေ့ဆုံပြီးစောင့်ရှောက်ပေးနိုင်ခဲ့ခြင်းအတွက်ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါသည်။

I first started as a Live-In Caregiver under Active Global back in 2016. My first client was a 78-year-old ahgong with a history of diabetes, dementia, and stroke. Sometimes ahgong would get so upset that he did not want to see anyone – during those times, I always reminded myself to treat him with kindness, and focus on doing my best as a caregiver. Eventually, he would calm down and talk to us nicely again.

I took care of ahgong for more than 8 years, helping him with activities of daily living, monitoring his vital signs, keeping his space tidy and making him soup from time to time. I started my days with ahgong greeting him with a warm smile and taking him to the coffee shop nearby for some breakfast. At home, I guided him through simple exercises to keep his muscles engaged, and helped him spend his free time with his favourite pastimes like reading the newspapers or watching the TV. I genuinely enjoyed caring for him. Time passed so quickly and I was deeply saddened when he passed away, as he had become such an important part of my life by then. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to meet and care for him.

My next client was an ahma who required NGT feeding and regular wound dressing. I focused on making sure she was as comfortable as possible, giving her bed baths twice daily, turning her every few hours to prevent bed sores and changing her diapers regularly. Although she could not speak, I never let that hinder our connection. I would talk to her about the weather, share some stories or describe what was happening outside – her eyes and small expressions were enough to tell me that she was listening to me. I also played her favourite TV programmes and sat beside her as she watched, while guiding her through light exercises to keep her active at home. I held her hand every once in a while to reassure her she was not alone. My goal was always to give her not just care but warmth, dignity and companionship that she deserves every day.

I truly appreciate Active Global for giving me these opportunities. I have gained so much knowledge and experience since joining Active Global, and I truly appreciate everyone here for giving me these opportunities. I highly recommend my fellow caregivers to be part of the Active Global family too.

I first came to Singapore as a domestic worker, helping with cooking, cleaning as well as taking care of my employer’s elderly mother. It was then that I realised that I like taking care of the elderly, and so I joined Active Global after finishing my contract with my previous employer.

When I first joined Active Global, everyone in the team was very welcoming and provided me with relevant training for this profession for free. I am very thankful for that as the training was very useful, especially when it came to taking care of the elderly’s wounds.

For example, one senior I was caring for had a stoma wound which needed constant monitoring. I helped to clean and dress her wound everyday, and also accompanied her for activities such as exercising and shopping. Over time, the stoma wound started to recover well and both the senior and her family members were very happy and appreciative of my care and support.

Another senior I had cared for was bedridden and had bed sores. I was determined to help her recover fully and made sure I took good care of her dressing everyday. Eventually, her sores healed after 3 months. Seeing the smile on her face again, we could tell that she was much more comfortable and in less pain now. I continued taking care of her for the next few months until she passed away.

Seeing the seniors and their family happy with my caregiving efforts makes me happy too. It is one of the biggest motivations for me to keep doing what I do here with Active Global.
